When we say Santa, you probably think of an old fat guy with a bushy beard - but what if they were a woman, or non-binary? Isn't everyone capable of spreading Christmas cheer?
This is the debate that's heating up right now after a councillor in Newton Aycliffe (near Durham) complained last month about a woman being cast in the role of Santa in the towns Christmas parade.
Arun Chandran, the Newton Aycliffe councillor who was against the idea of a female Santa, told The Times that the role is only appropriate for men.
My understanding is that Santa Claus, otherwise called Father Christmas, is a male role. I have no issue with a Mrs Claus. But Santa Claus being a man is a long-held tradition accepted by the vast majority of society. Others in the council initially disagreed - with Bill Blenkinsopp, 70, responding: We voted unanimously, theres nothing wrong with the lady Santa. Does it matter who Santa is?
However, the council voted on it again a few days later and, following a debate, ended up reversing their decision, ruling that the role of Santa Claus should continue to be a male role.
Their see-sawing response reflects changing attitudes to Santa in wider society. A recent study has claimed that 27.8% of people in the US and UK would prefer Santa to be either a woman or non-gendered. Of those, 10.6% say they want a female Santa, while 17.2% want the character to be gender neutral.

Sure why not? They’re both myths. If you’re going to invest time and energy into myths might as well shape them to your own preference.
There! Fixed it!!!!
A derivative of St Nicholas. A Catholic Bishop.
I doubt if St. nick would be happy with St Nikki.
Ho’, Ho’, Ho’ ? ......
Whatta bout St. Nookie?
I’m a woman. Santa is a guy. Period.
Everybody’s waiting for the MAN with the bag. I don’t mean Bill Clinton.
And a tranny tooth fairy while at it.
In the future the liberal church will change George Washington’s gender too ...
I have a different question. Should people who ask whether Santa Claus should be female or gender neutral be thrown in insane asylums? That is a better question.
They just can’t fathom Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus as a balanced couple. Gotta be one or the other to them, and in the name of inclusion, let’s exclude Mr. Clause.
I’ll answer that
Sant Claus was Saint Nicolas. Same person. A real person. He was a bishop. one of his many virtues was his devotion to the poor. He would throw money into their homes through open windows under cover of night anonymously for their dignity so they could have joy. He had a particular ministry for poor brides whose fathers had no dowry. St Nick would provide money for them so they could have joyful weddings
There are as many women saints as there are men saints. God is not sexist. His rules apply to both
There is a woman Saint who personifies Christmas. That’s the mother of Jesus. When meditating advent as Catholics are called to do they encounter Mary and her contribution daily. One realizes in an orderly way that Santa diminishes as he would prefer, no doubt
Jesus’ first miracle was at the wedding of Cana where his mother prompted him to provide wine as their friends, the family of the bride, ran out of wine for want of money. Mary could see the importance of joy (not to be confused with overindulgence at a wedding where the bride and her family would have the means to give
The meAning of Christmas is Jesus regardless. He would have us regard His mother as Queen and Saint Nicolas as great helper.
He is way above all the gender bickering.
I am a lady and the thought of a female Santa never even occurred to me. I’m perfectly happy with the tradition. Besides, riding all over the world in an open sleigh and sliding down chimneys would mess up her hair and dirty her dress.
And dont forget disabled, you ableist bigot
a better question is Should people who wonder about the gender of Santa Claus be allowed to continue living?
Why don’t snowflakes just melt and go away!!!!!!!
