A 7-year-old girl from Guatemala died of dehydration and shock after she was taken into Border Patrol custody last week for crossing from Mexico into the United States illegally with her father and a large group of migrants along a remote span of New Mexico desert, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Thursday.

The child’s death is likely to intensify scrutiny of detention conditions at Border Patrol stations and CBP facilities that are increasingly overwhelmed by large numbers of families seeking asylum in the United States.

According to CBP records, the girl and her father were taken into custody about 10 p.m. Dec. 6 south of Lordsburg, N.M., as part of a group of 163 people who approached U.S. agents to turn themselves in.

More than eight hours later, the child began having seizures at 6:25 a.m., CBP records show. Emergency responders, who arrived soon after, measured her body temperature at 105.7 degrees, and according to a statement from CBP, she “reportedly had not eaten or consumed water for several days.”

Not our problem, find and charge the parents and folks that caused this, credit the Border Patrol for trying to save her life.

Hmm, not the fault of her being taken into the detention center, then.

Those who encourage illegals to take these treks across deadly hostile terrain *should* feel culpable at the resulting deaths. But they won't. Power is too important to them to ever really care about poor people.

Father should be prosecuted for child endangering and manslaughter. He deprived his own daughter of “food and water for several days.“

Maybe crossing deserts with children is a bad idea.

The headline suggests the Border Patrol is responsible for her condition when, in fact, it was her own father. He should be charged with negligent homicide.

DJT would not do such a thing. At that time it was Mike Pence’s turn to do the deed.

So these horrible, criminal mothers and fathers from these third world countries are basically murdering their children.

I almost died from dehydration due to an unknown virus.

Acute renal failure and a BP of 60/40 by the time my son got me to the ER.

On the bright side, I kept off the 70 pounds I lost through the ordeal

I wonder how many little girls died in the Mexican desert. Any tears for them?

This is a tragedy entirely the making of those who dragged her through a desert at 7 years of age. It is also the fault of corrupt politicians in her home country who fail her and the rest of their citizens, while they hold on to power, and use the US as a convenient villain on which to deflect blame. This is horrible.

this so called ‘father’ is directly responsible for the childs death...

He’ll be arrested for gross negligence and child abuse and murder in 3,2, 1...

Sorry, but coming from the AP, I really do not trust a single word in the article.

That’s the way it is.

Very old story in “news time”. The poor girl apparently had other severe medical problems before she was taken into custody (and reportedly received good medical care).

Her parents should be charged with “child neglect” and the Wash Post should be, like the British did to the White House about 1813, burnt to the ground for being the lying media whorehouse that it has become, esp. under Bezos the Rich Crazy White Leftist Trump Hater.

My wife asks me why I bother to buy the WP. I tell her, I read it like an intelligence report on our enemies to see what their plans are, what their strategies are in print, what Marxist (Alinsky) tactics they will use to destroy someone/organization/idea, and who their media Marxist whores are.

Having read the Post since the 1960’s, that’s never been a problem in picking out their writers - Communist, Marxist, pink, left-liberal (damned few honest liberals - none left now that I can see) and batshit insane like Eugene Robinson, Ruth Marcus, the every psycho smear-artist Dana Milbank and his Mini-Me E. J. Dionne, among others.

If Sun-Tzu, Clausewitz and Patton didn’t say it, I will - “Read what your enemy writes, and believe them when they say they want to destroy you” (or as Patton reportedly said, at least in the movie, “Rommel, you glorious bastard, I read your book”.

Did her unfit father, who never should have brought a young child on such a journey, not see to it that she ate and drank before he did? My father would have.

she “reportedly had not eaten or consumed water for several days.”

So why had her father denied her water for so long?

Hopefully the father didn’t do it for monetary reasons. The left is not above doing something like that.
