I had two ,sister. The neighbor shot one to death years ago. I was tempted. But the Lord stayed my hand . Thank God because have enjoyed 11 more wonderful years with the surviving sister.
A Melanosis that affects only Belgians? must be the waffles and brussel sprouts that cause this.
I like dogs but couldn’t resist the mis-spelled pun hat tip to Austin Powers.
Plus, she was and still is (only quite a bit less so nowadays) scared to death of loud noises, especially thunder, gunfire and firecrackers. Not at all 100% like you think a Malinois should be. She does NOT like to play with humans. Never did. Doesn't understand it. Thinks you are attacking her.
She's basically a completely different dog now (but sill hates playing), mellow, affectionate, and loves to lay on our bed and be told what a good girl she is and have her ears scritch-scratched.
Would we do it again? Absolutely. Amazing dogs.
The Malinois looks exactly like a dog that I was raised with from birth. My relatives didn’t know what breed he was and guessed that he was some kind of boxer mix with a long nose and un-cropped tail. He seemed to be a little taller and longer than most boxers, too. He liked to stand close enough to be touching me much of the time, when I played outdoors as a kid.
He wasn’t a problem with friends or neighbors at all, but he didn’t like mean dogs. He stayed with my grandpa, when we moved away. Grandpa loved that dog. There, the dog whipped a couple of bulldogs of some kind in grandpa’s yard and was run over by a train while chasing them across tracks another time, when he was 9.
My Celeste has had protection training for over a year. She has been sensitized to gunfire, and been taught bitework. We are working on her climbing trees now. Our co-trainer, retired from 28 years training with police K9s, tells me she will never quit working to protect my family, friends, or me; not a broken leg nor a gunshot. He tells me she knows I will do the same for her. I will. She is not a cuddly lap dog as she is always attentive and moving. Her sense of hearing is (I’m told) about 700 times more capable of a human. She lets me know if there is a strange (Fedex, UPS, or work truck) parked across the street. We had to teach her how to bark. And she does it only for warning. It is a unique, and wonderful breed. She is currently free from a leash and one vocal and hand signals. She will always stop at every intersection and sit until receiving permission from me to move forward. She loves all people including my 4 year old granddaughter. She is not aggressive unless commanded. She is my “back up” firearm that is always loaded for action, if needed.
I was told that a Mal is characterized by three F words - Faithful, Fearless, and Ferocious. But all are under control of the handler.
It’s the dog my PD has used for quite some time. They are unbelievably strong and fast.
Go for a puppy, GSDs are the best dog EVER! If they grow up around your kids they will be fantastic- but beware you will have to put them outside before you discipline your kids!! They become VERY protective of children!!
Find a Schutzhund Club in your area for training. They do 3 areas Obedience, Tracking and Bite work (protection). The dogs can go through Level 1 , 2 & 3. Good for dog and owner.

You could check out a German shepherd rescue in your area. Our rescue does a pretty good job about matching dogs with family situations, such as grandkids or friends visiting, small dogs, other pets, etc.
Mine is a very strong protection dog, strong enough I muzzle her in public. A lot of the time I wouldn’t need to, but I don’t chance it. With family, friends, and kids she’s to the other extreme, a lover puppy.
I have done a lot of training, she’s done bitework since 6 months, tracking, heels on and off leash, etc. as well as sleeping in the bed with us. Nobody’s sneaking up on us!

A Belgian Malanois war dog has to do everything a police K-9 has to do, but also must obey commands perfectly when exposed to the deafening sounds of jets, bombs exploding and guns firing. They have to also be able to stay awake and function perfectly for up to 30 hours at a time (like their handlers, who have long duty hours in a war situation).
Belgian Malanois war dogs are at their peak for only a few years while they’re young. When their stamina starts to wane, they often “retire” and become police K-9’s. Police dogs get in lots of rest and naps while on duty, it’s a nice little “retirement” job.

My Mals were never ‘war dogs’ in their youth .’They were however morale support K-9’s for visiting teams of Marines and
soldiers doing convoy movement duty , for many years , so in that way they served .
Mals mellow down real nice . My Mal is 14 and just really easy going and relaxed . She knows she’s the queen and expects all other dogs to respect that . They tend to .
When you are with a Mal steadily for this long , and I have had her since she was a pic—of-the-litter pup , you get to enjoy the benefit of all their ambient intelligence and devotion . You know each other 100% . There is a psychic connection , they read your mind and they understand you plain spoken voice . They never do anything that is incorrect or displeasing . The ,long ago well learned how to groove with their human .
So if there are any ‘rescue Mals ‘ out there , aging Mals that need a good home ; RESCUE THEM ! They deserve it , they earn it and they are the worlds best companions in their old age . Unless....they are K-9 PTSD , I guess ....mine isn’t
