Free is best but secure is what I'm more concerned about. Any input is appreciated and preferably at the level of a dumb 2nd grader. Kids today know so much more...

‘You mean with a cloth?”
What about “BleachBit”? Maybe that’s for the whole HD? Where do the “deleted” reside? Better let the experts answer this one.

Sorry couldn't resist a Hillary joke.
Bleach bit is good. But you mention emails. Emails are tricky. I have Yahoo I use and they host my business account. They keep records of emails forever. So emails really depend on who your account is listed with.

I use CCleaner Free. Works fine, and I don’t need the extras you pay for, since I have other programs to do that work.

Although, its usually to late when someone says that to you.

ccleaner is one of the most trusted but with windows 10 there is already a built-in command.
from an elevated command prompt “cipher /w:C:” will run a secure delete on all free space on the C: drive, you can also specify a specific folder.
It works by writing random encrypted data over the free space and then deleting it, pretty much the same as ccleaner.

Only one guarantee. Remove the hdd, install a new hdd and reinstall a new os. Take the old hdd apart and play with the magnets. Remove the platters and #uck them up any way you see fit. Or just shoot the hdd with you handgun or rifle of choice.
