Some 252 million years ago, Earth almost died.
In the oceans, 96 percent of all species became extinct. Its harder to determine how many terrestrial species vanished, but the loss was comparable.
This mass extinction, at the end of the Permian Period, was the worst in the planets history, and it happened over a few thousand years at most the blink of a geological eye.
On Thursday, a team of scientists offered a detailed accounting of how marine life was wiped out during the Permian-Triassic mass extinction. Global warming robbed the oceans of oxygen, they say, putting many species under so much stress that they died off.
And we may be repeating the process, the scientists warn. If so, then climate change is solidly in the category of a catastrophic extinction event, said Curtis Deutsch, an earth scientist at the University of Washington and co-author of the new study, published in the journal Science.

How was this warming possible without any humans, factories, SUV’s, etc.? Are they suggesting that there is historical, scientific precedent for massive climate change that has nothing to do with human activity? This is blasphemy is is not?
No mention of the flash frozen mammoths due to “sudden warming”? Did the times look back in their archives to find this info? Did they interview rbg?
The past is a guide to the future. Earth scientists know far more about long-term (thousands or millions of years) climate patterns than meteorologists ever will. There's a big difference between "climate" and "weather." Climate is what happens with weather patterns over long periods of time; weather, the domain of meteorologists, is the short-term study of what may happen next weekend.
I'd settle for algore selling his beachfront property...
Earth Scientist is a made-up word.
Heck, thirteen thousand years ago an extinction level event occurred that wiped out 35 genera (multiple species per genera) of huge herbivores and carnivores.
It will happen again, but probably never have to live through it.
Con artists never give up the con. The more we ignore these liars the bigger and more dire the lies become.
Strange no equal mention of the “Snowball Earth” of 650 mya also without any possible human intervention. The earth changes but you ignore inconvenient facts at the NYTimes.
It's true! Just look at what the IPCC experts show happened when the world warmed for the Medieval Climate Optimum (AKA Medieval Warm Period)!
It was a terrible disaster and 98% of all life on earth was wiped out, which is why that climate anomaly was called an optimum. Oh, wait. "Optimum" implies that warming was good. Those who pretend to be scientists today will need better spin on that one. And the warming from when we left the "Little Ice Age" in about 1860 to the present? Is that because conservatives have been driving SUVs for 150 years, or is that because planets naturally warm up when they leave a full ice age or even a little one?
Taxes weren’t high enough then either.
Not so! Neanderthal methane farts.
What was the cause, of this catastrophic previous “sudden warming?”
https://earthsky.org/earth/great-dying-252-million-years-ago-concided-with-co2-build-up
... increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide during the Permian period likely triggered severe global warming, accelerating species extinctions. The cause of this increased CO2 is unknown...
Neanderthal methane farts?
or more likely, the outpourings of the Siberian Traps.
Correct. When the earth warms the number of and diversification of species grows.
And it did it all on its' own. No SUVs or fossil fuels to blame.
Just nature.
