Stephen Hillenburg, who created SpongeBob SquarePants and the absurd undersea world he inhabited, has died at age 57, Nickelodeon announced Tuesday.

Hillenburg died Monday of Lou Gehrig's disease, also known as ALS, the cable network said in a statement. He was 57.

Hillenburg had announced he had the disease in March 2017. His death comes just weeks after the passing of another cartoon hero in Marvel creator Stan Lee.

An Oklahoma native with a love of both drawing and marine biology, Hillenburg conceived, wrote, produced and directed the animated series that began in 1999 and went on to spawn hundreds of episodes, movies and a Broadway show

FWIW, I’ve known a guy for many years, 55, wasting away from it. A musician who went to a lot of concerts, a family man now, no athletic experience to my knowledge.

And then there was #neverTrumper Stephen Hawking, who I don’t believe had ALS, despite Big Media’s adoration and hype.

This girl would have been in her mid to late 30s. Slender.

He’s been dead for decades, if I’m not mistaken.

Very sad to hear. My family, both kids and adults, really enjoyed Spongebob. To this day, we reference it in jokes. :)

I used to watch Spongebob with my nephew, then I had my son so now we watch it together. My favorite character is Squidward. I didn’t even realize Hillenburg was ill so this really comes as a surprise. May he rest in peace.

You’re a bit late.
Charles Schultz died in February, 2000. Gone but not forgotten.

My wife and I watched it with our grandkids who lived with us for a few years.

Very funny and entertaining. Even for adults.

We watched it so much, we knew almost every line of dialogue for each character in every episode.

It was a fun time with the kids. We still talk about stories we watched together.

ALS is a terrible, terrible disease, and one of the most perplexing mysteries in medical science. Researchers have made comparatively little progress in finding a treatment for ALS, despite decades of work and (probably) billions in funding. Last I heard, Canadian scientists had discovered that a drug used to treat schizophrenia may have some effect in slowing the symptoms of ALS, but that’s about all medical science can offer right now.

I love to watch SBSP.
Seen them all.
Patrick Starfish is a bit much, not my favorite...but love the other characters.
Due to my entrepreneurial spirit and frugality, my spouse has often referenced Mr. Crabs and My Lucky Dollar.

RIP creator of a funny and decent show.
