After two seasons of declining ratings, viewing of NFL games is up in 2018. There are a few reasons for the uptick in TV viewing, including a lot of high-scoring games and marquee matchups in prime time.
In 2017, the ratings for the NFL regular season had dropped by 10% from the 2016 season. It marked the second consecutive year ratings had declined. So far, 11 weeks into the 2018 season, NFL ratings are up by 4%, marking the first ratings increase in three years.

Yep, not TIME covers recently about Chicago murders and no "credit" type scrolls at the end of "This Week" with the Chicago dead like they did for soldiers shot in unpopular "wars".
For me it's like watching a no-hitter (or even more specially, a perfect game) in baseball. At first you are like "1-0, ho hum". Then around five innings in your begin to realize what's happening even though tradition forbids you from saying it out loud. Suddenly every single pitch is the most exciting thing in the world. One bad pitch would end it but if he can keep it up .... history!
Yeah, the score in that game told me that the “best” 2 teams in the NFL have no defense. Kinda reminds me of Superbowl XLVIII. Denver was the “best offense ever” and expected to rout Seattle, only to lose 43-8. If either the Rams or the Chiefs make the Superbowl against ANY team with a decent defense, I would pick the team with the defense.

I see two reasons TV ratings are up:
1) A few players are still kneeling, but they say or show nothing on TV. NFL probably got the TV execs in a room and they agreed to stop to their mutual benefit to ghost the kneelers.
2) Most stadiums are no more than half full on game day, if that. This likely tied to a precipitous drop in season ticket holders. Some portion if these people now watching at home since they don’t begin the game by pissing them off with kneeler exposure.

They have had beer ads forever. The Budweiser Clydesdales … ? I think it was Jack Daniels that started advertising during the Superbowl about 10 years ago with some special Bourbon that may have been the first hard liquor ad, but I think that was more of an FTC thing than a football thing.

Folks on our side love to talk a good game, but in the end they sit on their ass, and gladly give these people business and money.
Liquor ads are a new thing apparently. Liquor as in hard spirits. Guess, for some reason, the NFL felt it needed the revenue, eh?

The nfl did a two week “Salute our Troops” PR move where coaches wore Army green and uniforms had flag patches.
NFL exists on corporate welfare - local taxes going to pay for billion dollar stadiums.
That's what stopped people from watching.
Now that we're not reading stories after every game about who on which team was kneeling, it's no longer in the publics' mind.
If they start kneeling again there will be another backlash.
For the NFL they benefit from 'out of sight, out of mind'.
Yes, people do have a short memory about this issue.
Please, I want to be as cool as you, anything else I should be boycotting?

Hard Liquor ads are an FTC thing. Once they allowed it, the NFL simply sells ads to the highest bidders, and the Superbowl is the highest rated show of the year. I guess I don’t understand why you think they would purposely exclude some advertisers that can advertise on any other program on TV.
4% growth after 2 years of 10% decline is not really something to cheer about.
And frankly, the increase is more than explained by the more popular teams being on the TV now Instead of putting some team with a 1-million audience on monday night football, they jigered the schedule so that teams with greater followings were shown.
Also, actual attendance at games has fallen precipitously this year, some of those people are probably watching on TV instead.
They aren’t televising the playing the national anthem in many cases. Out of sight, out of mind.
