A baby girl is safe and sound after a scary incident in a North Carolina Golden Corral restaurant.
Hannah Marie Jarvis was celebrating Thanksgiving at the family restaurant on Thursday, along with seven other relatives. But things got scary when her 7-month-old daughter Calli started to choke on her dinner.
*snip*
A waitress first attempted to help, but then yelled out if anyone in the restaurant could assist. It was then that fellow diner Deborah Rouse stepped in and saved Callis life.

What she did — turning her over and pounding on her back - - isn’t the Heimlich, is it?

They shouldnt allow choking babies at Golden Corral...
pounding on the back is not heimlichs procedure, but the proper way to dislodge food from anyone choking

If you are giving the kid mashed potatoes, you need to make sure they aren't too dry/stiff and give small amounts. Make sure it is all swallowed before you give more. Give her some liquid.

How strange that putting a baby or child on it’s stomach across one’s lap (or hanging upside down) and striking the back should be mislabeled the “Heimlich” by a major news outlet. Heimlich is a jarring procedure and can, if done right, even break ribs. Anyway, kudos to all!

The mother labeled it that as a layperson, not technically correct. But the way to aid a choking infant is hold them on the lap, do chest thrusts, similar to Heimlich, the flip over to and do back slaps, repeating till the object is dislodged. She done good.

I wonder what other situations could be helped better by the employee making an appeal for anyone able to help? I have been to many places of business over the years where as I exit an ambulance is present. I usually get the feeling that stores/businesses don’t want customers to know there is an issue being it’s not announced in any way. But maybe the person in need could have been helped more while waiting for on medical people to arrive?
More than once while I’ve been on airplanes they have had to ask for any medical people on board to help with a passenger, so why for on the ground situations is it more hush and wait for EMT.....I think all situations are important and timely, even if people like myself who are not very medically trained can do nothing more than pray - at least we would be alerted and can do that and God can take it from there.

I have a theory that a Shop Vac would do the job. Just have to make sure the tounge is under the hose end and not in it.😀

It is for infants and small toddlers. I can attest it works. It worked when I needed to use it on my son.

there are different methods for the Adult Heimlich Maneuver and the Child or Infant Heimlich Maneuver. You mistake the adult version as the only version. Just so you and the rest of the ignorant people may be cured of this ignorance, I have included a link to video made by a CHOC Children a healthcare facility for children, children's hospital for the layperson, who calls the maneuver for children. Here is a question if an adult self-administers the Heimlich Maneuver using the top edge of a chair, do you still call it the Heimlich Maneuver? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXaLc-AwX2g

Technically, no; however, it is the process taught to new parents for use with infants and small children and usually accompanies training for Heimlich and CPR.
(which is why it got lumped into the same category inthe article). I needed to use it on my son when he first started with solid foods. Instead of panicking, my training took over immediately and I was able to dislodge the food quickly.
Any parent/grandparent should learn it.
