With the embers still raining from blackened skies choked by Californias massive wildfires, the effort turns to rebuilding Paradise a town of almost 30,000 that was wiped off the map.
But experts warn that with megafires the new normal in a warming global climate, housing in the western United States is going to need a revolutionary rethink along the lines of villages dotting Europes wooded slopes.
I think people are thinking about if there is a way we can design the new Paradise that can look like more of a European village or a ski town, and not have houses out in the forests, said Bill Stewart, co-director of the Center for Forestry at the University of California, Berkeley.
Stewart suggests the approach seen in the Pyrenées mountains straddling France and Spain villages surrounded by pastures with the forest further beyond may be the model for Californias future. It would be a lot safer if we didnt have people basically living in the fuel, he told AFP.
The death toll in and around Paradise in the tinder-dry northern foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains stands at 81, with hundreds still missing and more than 12,600 homes destroyed since the giant Camp Fire broke out on November 8.
Climate change, poor management of forests by the US government and sharp increases in housing in the woods have all made such megafires more likely and more deadly, said Stewart.

And attract the rich at a price current residents cannot afford.
Good, Good, Good, ..... I hope it rains so hard the Spotted Owl ends up purchasing a Bongo-Board!
It would be a lot safer if the brush fuel were CLEARED like it should've been.

it’s my understanding that the state blatantly misappropriated the funds raised through fees and taxes expressly for fire mitigation and forest management and spent the money on bull**** gimme dat projects and/or filled their own and cronies pockets with the money.
If that’s even close to truth, every state legislator and manager in the state level forestry service should be hanging right next to the gov in a nice row of rotting human garbage.
We need to concentrate the peasants into confined areas so we can round them up when the time comes.
It will be dictated by insurance companies.
The difference there in Europe is it rains all the time
Cal doesnt ever have rain for 6-7 months a year every year
Thats the problem. Not living in the forest
We have redwood trees. They dont burn and dont have underbrush
Try setting a forest on fire on the east coast. Nothing will happen
Or they could build fire breaks.
Yep. Europe has at least twice the average precip of CA.
#8. Now I understand the song “It Never Rains in California”.
However, there is something called the Pacific Ocean right next to California and surprisingly, it has a shitload of water that could be desalinated and used for various projects in the state.
“Forget it Jake, it’s Chinatown and the farmers nearby don’t need no stinkin’ water”. Just ask the 40,000 or so farmers the Dems tried to destroy in Rep. Devin Nunes’ district.
California’s new slogan for newcomers - “If any forest care program is run by Democrats, it will burn”.
Isn’t the surrounding pasture to serve as a fire break?
Or, you could just manage your forests by not allowing undergrowth to build for a century. But but but global warming.
Fire proof cement and very neighborly
The most democratic housing, comrade.
Only the best for the People of the Rodinya....
“I think people are thinking about if there is a way we can design the new Paradise that can look like more of a European village or a ski town, and not have houses out in the forests,
This has been the goal all along of the hard greens. Let the forests go and burn humans out of them. Move them into sensible high rise housing, managed by sensible greens.
>>But experts warn that with megafires the new normal
50 years is new?
Been ignored for decades so much that it is seasonal and some of the raging fires are sparked by arson (including those in forestry) or accidents from illegal immigrant camps.
Wild fires have burned less area for some time. Fake News
Just like Aspen and Breckinridge.
