‘Northern Exposure’ Revival Starring Rob Morrow In Works At CBS From Original Series Creators, Cast

A long-talked-about revival of CBS’ cult fave drama series Northern Exposure is moving forward. The project has been put in development at CBS with original series star Rob Morrow set to reprise his role and executive produce. It hails from original series co-creators Josh Brand and John Falsey, actor John Corbett, Morrow, Ben Silverman and Universal TV.

Written by Brand, the revival centers on Dr. Joel Fleischman, played by Morrow, who returns to Cicely, Alaska, for the funeral of an old friend and finds a new set of quirky characters and reunites with old ones in this continuation of the classic series.

Brand executive produces with Falsey, Morrow and Silverman. Corbett produces. Universal TV is the studio.

The quirky comedic drama series ran on CBS from 1990 to 1995. During its 110-episode run it received a total of 57 award nominations, winning 27, including the 1992 Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, two additional Primetime Emmy Awards, four Creative Arts Emmy Awards, and two Golden Globes.

Cast and creatives of the original series reunited at the 2017 ATX Television Festival in Austin to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the former CBS series’ premiere, and of course talked turned to a potential revival. “We would love it. [Rob Morrow] has been working, trying to get them to do it… I’m sure we all would agree that we’d love to see it,” Brand said, contending that the series could play well in the current TV landscape. “It’s of a time, but it’s also not of a time.”

Brand and Falsey also were behind award-winning shows St. Elsewhere and I’ll Fly Away.

Morrow’s recent credits include the role of Adam DiGiulio on Billions and a guest role on Chicago P.D.

Corbett is known for his roles as Josiah “Flash” Bacon on FX’s Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll and Seth Holt on Parenthood.

If the project moves forward, it would be the latest in a string of broadcast TV revivals, joining Murphy Brown at CBS. ABC revived then canceled Roseanne, bringing it back as The Conners. A Veronica Mars revival limited series also is set at Hulu.

Morrow and Corbett are repped by Gersh.

Janine Turner is a conservative, so maybe she is blacklisted.

Yeah, I liked the original a lot and think a remake could work if done correctly, but you know it’d be political and therefore unwatchable. They just can’t help themselves.

Even though some of the original characters will be involved, I’m rather certain that CBS will make it unwatchable and disgustingly ‘politically correct’.

Rob Morrow was available. What a strange career - he was great in Quiz Show - expected that was his launching pad. But not quite.

I agree. These reboots rarely work if ever.

Brady Bunch and Beverly Hillbillies in movie form, but that was years ago, and they were actually pretty good.

I stopped watching TV shows a long time ago ,they’re like 5 minutes of show with 55 minutes of filler(dragged out crap) and ads

Netflix. Recently I have binged through Breaking Bad and Walking Dead, Mad Men and a few others. Nice.

If they hurry, they can get it to air before The Conners and Murphy Brown are cancelled due to declining ratings.

Northern Exposure was lightning in a bottle. Anything new would just not be the same.

Over the past fifteen years, creativity has stumbled off into a ditch. This attempt to bring Magnum PI back was a bad blunder. There might have been draw to Roseanne, but once they fired her and delivered the Conners to the viewers....that failed.

I give 50-percent of the responsibility for this trend to the network/production crowd that lives out of Hollywood...they’ve insulated themselves and can’t recognize decent story-lines or landscapes.

The other 50-percent is that Netflix has figured out short 10-to-12 episode ‘seasons’ are perfectly acceptable to the public, and you go off into some wild scenario that the Hollywood folks are fearful of.

Do you mean Dinner Rush? I've always liked this movie. Corbett is excellent. He has one of the best scenes in the movie.

A tragedy in the making. Hollywood has run out of ideas and talent. All that’s left is trading on past glories (case in point). The original series lasted about two seasons too long and had an entire “Jump the Shark” season when they brought on Anthony “Goose” Edwards. The new show doesn’t have a chinaman’s chance of being so much as a pimple on the old show’s butt.

We loved this show back in the day. Great ensemble. A reboot might work. We'll tune in for the first couple of episodes at least...

The lovely, intriguing Janine Turner was the reason to watch! I never cared about Rob Morrow.... ha ha. I recall that Janine is conservative, so Hollyweird probably shuns her.
