The sad, shocking story behind the Jonestown massacre, 40 years later
Yahoo TV/Entertainment ^ | November 16, 2018 | Ethan Alter Senior Writer, Yahoo Entertainment

...author Jeff Guinn, who wrote the 2017 book The Road to Jonestown.

...Guinn expressed some regret that the Jonestown massacre has become such a ubiquitous reference point, inspiring such oft-heard phrases as, “Don’t drink the Kool-Aid.” “First of all, it wasn’t Kool-Aid,” he notes. “And second, let’s face what the connotation is; it’s used to mean, ‘Don’t be a mindless zombie who just automatically follows orders from an obviously demented leader.’...

...We spoke with Guinn about the details that are often left out when Jonestown is discussed, and what parallels he sees between Jim Jones and a leader like Donald Trump...

Jeff Guinn: ...There were three huge surprises for me during the more than three years I spent researching. The first one involved Jim Jones. I had no idea that he had been such a great leader in the American civil rights movement. He and his wife almost singlehandedly ended total racial discrimination in Indianapolis, which was one of the most segregated major cities in America. There’s always an element of fraud there... But he accomplished all these good things that I’d had absolutely no idea about until I got to Indianapolis.

The second thing was that the quality of the people who joined Jim Jones and became members of Peoples Temple included some of the most intelligent, talented and socially committed people you’d find anywhere. These weren’t dummies just falling into place; they really believed in what Jones was preaching.

And the third thing is that the mental image most people have of what happened that day, 40 years ago, is that you had almost 900 people in line obediently drinking these cups of poison and falling over dead.... They hadn’t taken the poison voluntarily... So we’re talking mass murder as much or more so than mass suicide...

if your biggest up front point is that they didn’t drink “Kool-Aid” but rather “Flavor-Aid” you’ve lost the argument.

And Jim Jones was a Marxist Democrat player protected by the leftist Democrat establishment in San Francisco and DC.

Apologists trying to make the case for socialist utopias while ignoring the excess and despotism do society a great harm.

And comparing him to Donald Trump and his follower? Pu-lease.

But what do you expect from Robert “Hollywood Red” Redford’s Sundance Channel?

I’m only surprised that it isn’t the pinkos at PBS airing this as they’ve profiled (favorably) the antics of the SLA and Weather Underground.

Spot on, on all that. It’s amazing how few know the Dem links Jim Jones had.

Don't let the fact that Jim Jones was cheered by all the best and brightest Leftists in San Francisco get in the way of the interviewers TDS.

You could go back to the mayoral election in SF...1975, and Jim Jones with his regional church ‘racket’ helped to defeat the GOP guy....John Barbagelata, and bring George Moscone to power. That one single defeat shifted the base of power in the entire area, and ended the GOP as a player in local politics.

The cult players came in and canvased moderate neighborhoods, and got people enthusiastic about Moscone, and then they brought in busloads....maybe into a couple of thousand non-residents to vote in the city election.

yep, Harvey Milk, Mayor Masconi, Willie Brown were all friends of Jim Jones... Jones probably stole the election for Harvey Milk by bringing in people to vote.. Jones was so powerful in San Fran that that one of his laywer was put in charge to investigate the election fraud. Obviously, he didn’t find any.

The comments are pretty brutal about the anti-Trump nonsense.

The Red Dupe author was still looking for the good that Jim Jones did over the years.

Just like Red Asner wanted to make a pro-Stalin film declaring that he’d done things besides killing 20,000,000 Russians.

To this day the newsweek magazine cover pic with all the dead bodies is imprinted in my mind.

Like so many othe things, the Bible warns us about the dangers of this world.

Matthew 7:15-20

"...These weren’t dummies just falling into place; they really believed in what Jones was preaching. ..."

Uh huh.

And they're dead because of it.

So, yeah, they WERE dumbasses.

The so-called "truth" of Jonestown is just that simple.
