Fashion Notes: How to Recycle a Dress Like First Lady Melania Trump

collage

When you are one of the most photographed women in the world like First Lady Melania Trump is, there are only so many times you can wear a dress.

Some ensembles are obviously never to be worn again, they are part of a moment in time. Take Mrs. Trump’s Inaugural gown from French-American designer Hervé Pierre. Even if Mrs. Trump wanted to wear the dress again (she never would), she would not be able to as the piece is now a part of the First Lady Smithsonian National Museum of American History collection.

Even stand-out, style statements like her recent grey Dior ensemble in Paris will likely never be worn again by Mrs. Trump.

....

Mrs. Trump first wore the number to a March 2016 Republican primary presidential debate in Detroit, Michigan. For that evening, Mrs. Trump paired the dress with a matching blue clutch and a dark navy coat.

I never wanted to be a zipper more in my life!

POOF! You’re a zipper. Just not that one.
Somehow the zipper genie got you attached to HRCs outfit.
(Oh well, it’s not like HRC will be around forever.)

The Boob Belt was Queen Moochie's unique signature fashion style.
To some they look like cheap ammunition belts.
Others think of them as Klingon Death Belts.

Well, you have time to save, that’s for sure.

My daughter told me about a really good way to do that.

Whenever you get a $5 bill back for change, put in in a jar.

Very few people will miss $5 occasionally, and you’d be surprised how fast it adds up.

Or do a change jar.

That can add up fast, too.

Great. I was going to sleep tonight. I guess I’ll just clean the house.

Let me tell you a story

I grew up in a home of fashionable women, had my own WWD subscription at age 14. Enjoyed fashion and had very nice, sometimes hand tailored clothes.

Once I left home I really didn’t look much at clothing, back to the land, then worked in business, then a mom.

I had to go back to work in the early 2000’s. So I bought a wardrobe and went back into the work world. But everyone was wearing black...during the day!

Now when I was growing up, only the help and shopwomen wore black before cocktail hour. And now I was faced with all these high powered women, all wearing black, and unbeknownst to them, looking like housekeepers to me.

Took me a couple of weeks to get my head around it.

Then I noticed that my young neighbor, in her late thirties always had bed-head. And her blouse was always untucked, shirt tails all the time. I thought that she was just becoming a bit undone and sloppy with the three children and all.

We had no TV.

About 5 or 6 years later I say some picture of some daytime tv person named Ellen. She had the same look. Then I realized that my neighbor, and the other poor women were all in the height of trendy styles, mussy hair and shirt tails and all.

I was such a doofus. Still am.

That is so funny :) I pay attention to trends, but some seem absolutely ridiculous to me. Right now the “bold brow” is in. Whenever I see a young woman with that I think she looks like a Muppet. At least that isn’t permanent. Pencil thin brows stay with you for life.

My grandma taught her daughters well, my mom and aunt always look pulled together. I think I saddened my mom with my lack of style while in college. I was a science major which means hours more of class time due to labs. I was also on the track team so it was just easier to wear sweats all day and be ready for practice.

My professional career required some field work so I sported a fairly unfeminine look then as well.

As a stay at home mom I was in jeans and sweatshirts daily.

Now that I’m middle aged I finally care enough to figure out my style. I think my mom is relieved!

Having worked in the fashion industry one of the best things you can do for yourself is find a good seamstress who can do alterations well. It's not just about fit but about designing to your taste and style.

I've purchased some very expensive garments on sale with tremendous savings and then just alter them to my taste. Melania Trump does this as well. I bought a $1,000 black velvet gown on a mark down rack in a better dresses store. Changed the neckline, and other minor alterations, hem, waist etc. to fit.....When all was said and done...for shoes, jewelry, purse, gown and the alterations I spent $200.

Later I had it made into a cocktail dress.

Half of melania’s looks is she knows how to not only dress her frame...but how she carries herself.

Few realize she also takes into consideration the color scheme of the events she's attending....as well as the foreign diplomats countries colors. Melania Trump is one very fine tuned women who has made a point not only to know herself and tastes......but everything around her she sees as her responsibility.

She knew nothing of style or fashion sense.....it took years before she even got close.

Agreed. Jackie was a stylish woman, but certainly not the stop-traffic-in-the-streets stunner that we have in our Melania.

Additionally, we can add in her remarkable gracefulness and poise, which serve to enhance her beauty.

But, what really comes through is Melani’s loving nature. We all saw that, completely unscripted, in the picture with Ted Cruz’s little daughters.

This is a woman who could have had all of the night nurses and nannies she wanted, but chose to take care of her own son.

I could get really berserk over the way Melania is savaged by the Fake News. But, she just floats above it all.

You could see it in her face, too, in photos when she was holding the babies during her recent trip to Africa. They were candid, and you could see the happiness and love on her face. The best actress in the world couldn’t have faked that look.

Jackie seemed aloof and disengaged, for the most part.

Which probably pushed them over the edge and they can't do a thing about it.

That's part of what makes her so awesome.

And when she does acknowledge them in some way, it's with surgical precision and she cuts them to ribbons.

Love it! It's all part of her charm.

I don't think I've ever seen any other woman wearing one of those. Was this her attempt to create a fad that failed miserably?

They look like the belts they award to champion wrestlers.

There is no way to anticipate or explain what will become trendy.

Who would have thought it would be possible to convince women to spend over $100 on pants that are torn up to look like they were found in a dumpster?
