In US, cigarette smoking rate declines to new low
Washington (AFP) - Cigarette smoking is losing popularity in the United States, where health officials Thursday announced just 14 percent of the population now smokes, the lowest level ever recorded in the country.
Some 34 million US adults smoke cigarettes, according to a 2017 survey by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The 14 percent cigarette-smoker rate is down from 15.5 percent in 2016.
The current rate marks a 67 percent decline since 1965, the year the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) began collecting annual data on smokers, said the CDC report.

"For more than half a century, cigarette smoking has been the leading cause of cancer mortality in the United States," said National Cancer Institute director Norman Sharpless.
"Eliminating smoking in America would, over time, eliminate about one-third of all cancer deaths."

A few years and they’ll be planting pot in the tobacco fields.
MSM will cry that people quitting smoking will put cigarette companies out of business destroying many workers livelihood.
I quit smoking in 1981 when a pack of smokes cost $1. What are they now - $10? Insane.
“A few years and theyll be planting pot in the tobacco fields.”
Put your money in big tobacco for exactly the reason you state. That was the advice I got from my adviser when I asked him about who was going to prevail in the dope wars.
What’s the number on vaping? i believe the cig companies have smartly made the transition to vaping and made it cool with the younger set. Nicotine delivery is nicotine delivery.
It is amazing what ceaseless draconian government intimidation and harassment can do.
Yup and that is the ONLY reason smoking is down.. aside from the fact that MOST people who smoke, no longer admit to it on medical forms or to surveys.
They want us all smoking pot, but god forbid you want to smoke a cigarette lol
At least in rural Nevada, it seems like everyone still smokes.
Vaping is the trend now.
Did it drop all cancer deaths?
Did death from obesity-related disease increase during this time?
Did anxiety related disease increase during this time?
Did hypothyroidism increase during this time, since hypothyroidism is a problem that besets former smokers?
Many many vape
Good news.
However, I live in a small apartment complex of 20 units. About 1/3 of the residents are older/retired, 1/3 are middle aged, and 1/3 are young individuals or couples.
Nearly half of them smoke. I am surprised at the number of younger who smoke, considering about 25 years of anti-smoking education since the big cigarette settlement (abt 1995, IIRC).
Smoking remains very popular in Europe.
Full disclosure: My mother died of lung cancer after 61 years of being a 2 to 3 pack-a-day smoker. She passed away six days after her diagnosis.
Which is EXACTLY as she would have wanted it.
I defended her right to make her own choices in this allegedly free country.
I have never smoked.
In Heinlein sci-fi they grow tobacco on Venus.
The majority of smokers I know are slim and trim. The non-smokers -not so much.
It would be interesting to see historical statistics for the average weight of adults (before smoking was discouraged) and present day statistics.
I am always amazed to see so many adults in stores and physicians’ offices who are 400lbs+ - all ages, races etc.,
Fun Fact: Tobacco and Eggplant are close relatives. Eat 3 large eggplants and you’ll get about the same dose of nicotine that you’d get from one cigarette.
I quit smoking by vaping, no smell, a lot cheaper, House is SO MUCH cleaner and my mouth feels so much better, teeth are whiter OMG I am so happy to be done with cigarettes!!!!
In related news Lowe’s is closing 50 stores. People are shopping on line now.
I still smoke cigarettes but quit alcohol almost 30 years ago. When I got up at zero dark thirty today I stepped onto the bathroom scale and I weighed a half a pound more than I did when I got out of Navy boot camp in February of 1968.
