Florida voters overwhelmingly approved a measure on the ballot on Tuesday to ban greyhound racing throughout the state by the end of 2020 - though some warn dogs may be left homeless as a result.

Amendment 13, which required 60 per cent support in Tuesday’s voting, unexpectedly received a whopping 69 per cent, easily ensuring passage.

That means that the 11 greyhound racing tracks in Florida will be put out of business within the next two years, according to NBC News.

Now the challenge will be to find new homes for the up to 7,000 greyhound dogs who will be unemployed

I retired couple down the street have a greyhound, which was a rescue from, I think, Wisconsin. It is one of the mellowest dogs I’ve ever seen.

I hear greyhounds are sort of like Dobermans as Dobermans are essentially half greyhound. Dobermans can be a task. They aren’t like other breeds. They are nothing like Labs which are what most people are used to. Labs are sort of the Forrest Gump of dogs. Dobies are pretty suspicious and can be downright devious after dark. Once you can convince them you are part of the team they really bond to you like no other dog. I call my male my “shadow”. Where ever I am if you look in my shadow, there he is. Just watching. Waiting.

Sadly, yes. The fact is that greyhounds love racing as much as horses do. It is in their blood.

The lucky ones will get adopted, probably about one in eight.

My wife & I have a retired racer. They do make wonderful pets. We belong to a rescue group called Greyhound Pets of America. There is going to be a huge glut of greyhounds entering the adoption pipeline—likely more than can be absorbed. So a major unintended consequence will be thousands of the hounds being put down.

Greyhounds are large dogs and do require a fenced yard or be on a leash when outside. But when you adopt one, you get an adult pedigreed dog for next to nothing. They are not hyper, rarely bark, and can curl up in a small space. And they are beautiful athletes. If you are thinking of getting a dog, you might want to consider one.

I’m on my 3rd Doberman - a European male. The are wonderful dogs...called velcro dogs because they are always where you are. Scary smart, loyal, protective. The family is their pack. My friend says someone would be insane to break into your house. He guards everything he sees and is gentle with the babies. Can’t imagine having another breed.

We figured bigger is better so we have two. LOL. They have hair that is sort of zigzag which is like a “stealth coating”. At night you can’t see them because they are just a black hole in the night. They love to hide in the shadows and jump out at you. A 100 plus pound Dobie jumping from the shadows at night will really loosen your sphincters. They love getting that reaction. Devious dogs, they are.

They could ship them to Korea where they would put the “fast” into fast food.

They are wonderful dogs. I hope everyone who voted to eliminate racing considers adopting one.

I don’t see the “cruelty” in racing animals.

Pit bull fighting yes.

Racing? No.

How do these people know the dogs don’t like it?

For that matter, how do PETA folks know their pet is Willingly staying with them?

And since they can’t know, they must assume they are Incarcerating the animal and must let it go free.

Just about the same logic as banning dog racing.

LOL all true! I have a big back yard and cant see him at night. Had 2 boys at one time but lost the adult to heart problems. Thankfully had the puppy. They say 2 males don’t work but females can be a problem if they’re alpha. They are definitely intimidating if you’re a stranger.

Most will probably be put down.

That's the reality these knee-jerk liberal twit voters in Florida have been programmed to bring about by their masters.

Same thing with medical marijuana. Everyone who voted for legalization by the millions was a pot smoker. we don't have that many sick people in the population. Fraud.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize there are not going to be 8,900 Greyhound adoptions within the next 2 years.

But ya know, the left always says "If it feels good, do it". It must have "felt" really good to have been hoodwinked into believing blackening that little YES oval was gonna save 25 dogs the risk of injury.

What they won't ever get is that in reality they just condemned 8,900 Greyhounds to almost certain death by euthanasia. There aren't going to be that many dog adoptions within the next 2 years. The proceeds from those races is what kept those dogs alive, you stupid mother-f'ers!

Of course it helps that Florida's voters have to be the most gullible and stupid bunch of morons that ever walked the face of this earth.
