Amazon.com Inc is planning to split its second headquarters evenly between two locations - Long Island City in the New York borough of Queens and a Virginia suburb of Washington, DC.
The New York Times is reporting that the online retailer is in advanced stages of negotiations with local governments in both areas to conclude an agreement.
Earlier, the Wall Street Journal reported that the company decided to split its headquarters in two locations rather than just one.
The retailer previously announced a planned investment of $5 billion and 50,000 jobs for the second headquarters.
Under the new plan, the e-commerce giant will split the workforce with 25,000 employees in each city, the WSJ report.

Well, there goes ever seeing open hotel rooms in Crystal City. Will need a new spot to crash when I travel there on business, I guess.
In 2013, I lived in a decent studio apartment (2 miles from the Pentagon and Crystal City)...heat, electricity included....$1,150 a month. 15 ft by 35 ft. Plus was safe area and Metro-bus within 300 of the front door.
I’ll bet by 2021 when this is up and running...that same studio apartment will be $2,000. And a two-bedroom will likely be going for $2,750.
Just for decent housing within 25 miles...I’ll bet everything escalates 40-percent by 2021, and probably reaches close to 200-percent by 2030. It’ll be like San Francisco in the 1980s/1990s.
If the bribes from NYS and VA are large enough, employees will just have to embrace the suck.
Hey, I’m in that picture! I’m in the car directly behind the bus. If you look real closely you can see me shouting and waving my hands.
Amazon’s decision of NYC and DC is indicative of the corrupt crony capitalism we currently find ourselves in with the Federal Government and Wall Street.
Amazon and the other tech. giants needs to be broken up for anti trust reasons. Amazon and Google are the worst and need to be dealt with ASAP.
Amazon already manages the NSA’s data centers.
Rents in NYC are bad enough now. Wait until Amazon is firmly planted there. My bet is that a good part of the 25,000 new hires will be commuting into Queens from places out on Long Island.
I am grateful Amazon is not putting its HQ in Raleigh (longtime Raleigh resident here now living in Cary).
I have relatives who live in downtown Raleigh and others who live “inside the beltline” in Raleigh.
The traffic around the area is already horrible (on the beltline - 440 - at rush hour) so anything that promotes LESS traffic is good to me.
The Amazon AWS lock-in is already extraordinary. The government and defense contractors are paying tons of people to get Amazon brainwashing ("certification").
I am glad Dallas or any other Southern city (yes, I know Northern Virginia is technically in the South) did not get the second headquarters. Too many liberals could tip suburban counties toward the Democrats. If Texas falls to the enemy, finis America.
That was my first thought as well. Ive stayed many times at the Crystal City Marriott, and always find it to be one of the best locations for decent price and great convenience. I love the combination of attached underground mall and metro station. Plus its only one Metro stop in one direction from Reagan National and one stop the other direction from Pentagon City and the Fashion Centre mall.
I’m more of a Crystal Gateway Marriott man, it’s also attached to to the other side of that underground mall. Both can be hard to get into when congress is in session or there’s an event in DC. Now, impossible.
Ding, ding, ding. We have a winner.
You are correct. Amazon is going all-in for the Pentagon’s $10 billion cloud contract, and many believe they have the inside tract. If the win that contract, the Crystal City HQ will focused on government IT business, not selling merchandise on-line.
Heads of the Lucchese crime family are salivating..
Thank goodness Austin, TX didn’t get it. There is a home shortage and sky high property taxes and this would have only made it worse. The traffic is also horrible.
To me this seems a poor decision. I get LIC because it is NY with access to the kinds of people Amazon wants, both ethnically and culturally but I would have chosen Nashville or Indianapolis. Both have universities but each city is in Red flyover country and as a businessman I would have expected Bezos to at least attempt a connection with that America. But I suppose he only wants to their money. Just like a Prog.
