Box Office: Flag-Free ‘First Man’ Flopped All over the World
Breitbart ^ | 11/3/18 | John Nolte

Posted on 11/04/2018 1:36:33 AM PDT by JonnyFive

First Man has officially flopped, and not just here at home, but all over the world. After three full weeks in distribution, the critical darling will barely creep over $40 million domestic and, according to Deadline, has already fallen out of the top ten.

As of Thursday, and after 20 full days in release, First Man had grossed only $39 million domestic. Outside North America, the story about Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, is doing even worse, with just $37 million.

With a $60 million production budget and somewhere between $30 and $50 million spent on publicity (a reasonable guess), after exhibitors take their 50 percent (an industry accepted formula), this Ryan Gosling film would have to gross something close to $200 million just to break even.

Rewriting history fails. As it should.

I know the feeling...ever try and stay awake all the way through a screening of ‘Sully’?

Every tv I saw or heard about was on, watching the landing. I remember running outside to see the moon, which I could that night. Then I’d run back in to watch some more tv. I did this a lot. It was a feat of American genius and greatness, fulfilling JFK’s promise, produced by a batch of engineers, not bureaucrats.

Hmm, that’s somewhat odd. When I heard there was no flag scene I was already a “no” on watching the movie. Combined with the bad reviews, now I’m sure of it. The odd thing is, I went to Gosling’s IMDB page and poked around. I realized I haven’t seen any of the movies he has been in. Not one. For someone as old as me, who at least used to like going to movies that’s a little odd. Probably happen more, as I’m going to movies a lot less now - primarily because most of them are crap.

Whoever had the idea to film it with a handheld camera in reality TV mode is to blame. The jerky camera motion and many frames of blurry junk, as well as endless extreme closeups of Claire Foy’s face, ruined what could have been a good movie.

$100,000,000 to make a movie about the “space race” that denies there was a race to get to the moon.

Why didn’t they use that money to make documentaries about the surviving Apollo era NASA employees (ground and launched) instead?

Where is the globally distributed drama film about the USSR’s/CCCP’s space program?

I was working in software support at the Manned Spacecraft Center (before it was renamed for Johnson) at that time. A gorgeous, red-haired co-worker and I watched from bed. It was a very memorable evening.

I saw it as well. One of the greatest highlights in American history was portrayed in such a negative light.

Cool story.

Whenever I ran outside, I remember looking around and seeing only the hazy blue lights of tvs back then, shining through windows. Well, except for the moon.

When We Left Earth is a great documentary on the space missions. I don’t need Hollywood to act out the story, I lived it.

“Claire Foy”

Another blabbering Lefty. This film had alienated nearly 40% of the potential audience before it shot it’s first scene. Only in Hollywood can Producers / Directors walk away with from such a flop knowing there next gig is secured.

It was a rotten movie. Terrible acting, way too much focus on weird, borderline psycho men, nonstop brooding, and mediocre special effects. It was like two separate movies lashed together — nonstop focus on people with a bit of the history of spaceflight thrown in. The two separate movies really didn’t connect in a meaningful sense.

I expected it to be outstanding but marred because of the missing flag scene. But it was such a stinker overall that I completely forgot about the flag omission.

I fell asleep two or three times, too. On the way out, my son asked me “Did you hear that guy behind us snoring?” I don’t think it was the guy behind us.

There are enough flags all over the place. The big scene unfurling the flag on the moon is missing, but you see the flag on the moon later in some real footage.

The real reason to not go is it is a giant stinker. Don’t waste your money.

There was a lot of presentation of Soviet space firsts and acknowledgement of their successes. They could have emphasized the race more and in more certain terms, but’s it was there.
