Possibly testing an auto-release system that went wrong.
We had similar incidents with some fighters when consent for release activated and glitches released the weapon early. Good thing over Nellis airspace in the desert.
Of it could be the loadmaster inadvertently pressed the release.

Off by 5 miles in that report, not 1 mile.

They were testing.
We did it all the time in Yuma.
Yuma Proving Ground is a premier place for testing parachutes and dropping super-heavy loads out of planes.
This event shows why. The testing is done many mile from even a highway, out in the desert. Lots of safety area.
Even then, sometimes a load is lost. We had a picture of a truck that was destroyed by a load where the parachutes did not deploy properly.
You need lots of upper air meteorological data for testing parachutes.
That is what I and my team provided.

When my brother was in the Marine reserves (Vietnam era) they had a demonstration where they were supposed to drop some vehicles from a plane onto a field near the runway. They dropped like 4 transport vehicles and on 3 of them the parachutes fail to deploy. The 4th one landed perfectly at the end of the runway and sat there proudly until a jet came in for a landing and on landing accidentally discharged a missile which promptly took out the remaining vehicle.
A true FUBAR moment in military history.
