WRITETHRU SATURDAY 7:33AM after 12:15AM post: The 11th sequel in a horror franchise, executive produced by the series creator John Carpenter, starring the series original actress (Jamie Lee Curtis) in a female survivalist tale that speaks to todays times seems to be a recipe for box office success
Universal/Miramax/Blumhouses Halloween are coming in at $33.2M for Friday (including a great $7.7M Thursday night) making it the second-best first day for a horror movie after It ($50.4M), on a killing spree to become the second-highest domestic horror opening of all-time at $80.5M (also behind Its $123.4M) and the biggest opening of October, upsetting Venoms $80.2M record from three weekends ago. As weve mentioned, so far the box office trajectory many are using for Halloween is roughly akin to The Nun and It with Thursday previews accounting for 23% of Fridays ticket sales, a Saturday thats down in the low double digits (-10% to -15%) and a Sunday thats down in the 35%-40% range. More amazing? Halloween isnt getting any goosing from Imax which propped the opening weekends for It and Nun.

Other notables: Universal/DreamWorks First Man has a second weekend of $8.6M, -46%, 10-day of $30M. Uni was hoping for a second weekend hold in the Bridge of Spies range (-26%). Imax is still busy providing rocket fuel to the Damien Chazelle-directed astronaut drama which underperformed with a $16M opening last weekend.

Going to the movies is still a thing?
Die, Hollywood, Die!
It’s mostly younger audiences that go to the movies frequently. They flock to action and horror movies in droves. Attendance from older audiences (40 and older) is in decline though. Maybe because most movies seem geared to kids and teens.
Superhero movies I don’t get, but horror I love!!!!
I agree that other movies disappear quickly. I also think they make so many. Sometimes less, but better quality, is more.
Hey, it’s the original NPC!
I didnt even think of that! LOL!!
LOL. Good point!
Those movies for adults are still hanging on, but people arent going. I just went to one I liked last week called Bad Times at the El Royals. Of course, it bombed at the box office.
Royale
Why not just wait for it to come out on Netflix?
The great cast has me wanting to see it. Just about anything with Jeff Bridges is worthwhile.
One of the local talk radio hosts gave a scathing review of First Man. Said the director and the script made going to the moon a dour, joyless slog. As opposed to a celebration of one of the greatest achievements in human history.
That's what I do. I check the new trailers for upcoming movies, and then search for them on Netflix. If they're listed, I save them to my my "Saved" Queue. Every week or so I'll go back to the "Saved" Queue, to see if any new movies have been given a release date, and have been moved up into my "DVD Queue." Once they're there, I can then move them to the top of my "DVD Queue" and they'll be eventually sent upon release.
Glad to see First Man sinking. Very disappointed in Claire Foy.
