The two-foot by one-foot by one-foot boulder had been used to cover a borehole and was slammed down on Hannah Cornelius's head twice as she was held down, a court was told.
The fatal blow was delivered after at least three men had taken turns to rape the gifted scholar.
Hannah, 21, would almost certainly have died instantly according to experts. However, to make sure, one of her killers also plunged a knife into her neck.
Vernon Witbooi, 33, Geraldo Parsons, 27, Nashville Julius, 29, and Eben Van Nieberk, 28, face charges including murder, kidnap, robbery and rape.
The chilling exhibit was lifted with a struggle onto a desk before the judge at the Western High Court in Cape Town, South Africa, by two strong security guards.

Yes, you’re quite correct. I’ve been watching this in frustration since I made my first South African friend, back in the early 1980s. It was clear even then what course events would take.
They might walk. That’s why they are smiling.
Even if they don’t, they will very likely get very light sentences and be out of jail in short order.

My daughter had two close white friends at college from Zimbabwe. Their student visa expired and they went back. They were doing everything they could to stay, but couldn’t make it work and had to go home. I pity them. Such nice kids.
My daughter is dating a very nice man from Nigeria who came to the states when he was 16. I asked him if there was anything he missed from home. He simply said “No.”
