HOUSTON David Price picked the perfect time to book his first career playoff win as a starting pitcher. It sent the Boston Red Sox to the World Series. Arguably the worst postseason starter in baseball history, Price shut out a flat Houston Astros team for six innings Thursday night en route to a 4-1 victory in a pennant-clinching Game 5 of the American League Championship Series. The Red Sox, who won a franchise-record 108 games during the regular season, will host the winner of the Los Angeles Dodgers-Milwaukee Brewers National League Championship Series in Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday. The 33-year-old Price, working on three days rest, kept the Astros off-balance with an inside-and-outside, up-and-down command of the strike zone. He struck out nine, walked none and allowed three hits, with 65 of his 93 pitches going for strikes. His changeup, in particular, was devastatingly effective, inducing 11 swings and misses, including four for strikeouts. inal three outs to send Boston to its fourth World Series iHOUSTON David Price picked the perfect time to book his first career playoff win as a starting pitcher. oops, sorry for faulty text at the end, don’t know how that happened, but FR required me to excerpt for Yahoo.
The powers that be would love a Boston LA series. I was hoping for a Houston Milwaukee series myself.
I’m just happy that the yankees were sent packing.
Yeah, it doesn’t look good for the Brewers. The liberal sports media want their Boston-L.A. series.
ha understood, but as a Red Sox fan I was hoping for Red Sox vs. Dodgers all the way (sorry, I just can’t get excited about the Brewers).
I am surprised the Astros didn’t manage to put up a bigger fight in this series. I think almost every knowledgeable baseball fan expected a tougher longer series.
Its a game of inches and it just didnt go the Astros way this time. A couple plays could easily have made this a longer series. I figured this one was a guaranteed six or seven gamer with an edge to Boston.
Congrats from a Yankees fan.:D
that’s just dumb. and strange. and disgruntled in an angry chick sort of way.
I’m sorry your [fill in the team name] will watch the World Series from their couch, but you could certainly handle it with less weirdness.
well thank you, that is a mighty fine testament to FReeper good will !! ;^)
I am also not one of those Red Sox or Yankees fans who thinks it has to be such a blood rivalry, although I do enjoy the special rivalry! (I’m also not exactly any hard core sports fan, so I don’t hate anyone except perhaps the Dallas Cowboys... jk).
Outstanding series. The Bosox deserved to win, they earned it.
Although a huge Yankees fan, I pull for two local kids playing for the Red Sox. Chris Sale & Steve Pearce.
Absofreakintootley!
I’m really happy for them and for a lot of good “stories” in the lives of this year’s team, such as for J.D. Martinez whose career might have been washed up when he was cut by the Astros a few years ago..... heh heh what a turn-around his swing and his life had.
Very true, and if the drive by Bregman last night had gone a foot or two left or a bit shallower it might have been the game tying/winning hit instead of a spectacular catch by Benintendi. Freaky sport sometimes....
FEAR THE BEER!
I think you’re completely right that the network that’s broadcasting the WS is orgasmic over a potential Dodgers/Red Sox matchup, but I suspect it has everything to do with a ratings bonanza that they hope to score. ultimately, it’s about making a buck. that’s pretty American.
Milwaukee has a decent chance to take two at home. they’re better managed, for one thing. And there hasn’t been a single LA bullpen meltdown in the playoffs, so they’re due. soon. mark my words.
A Dodgers v Red Sox WS would be great!
I’m a Sox fan but honestly, I did not think they would get past the Astros. Our bullpen is nothing to brag about.
Red Sox. Dodgers.... 1916... 102 years ago... This time there is no Babe Ruth starting pitcher for the Sox.
Yeah our bullpen worries me still. Kimbrel just has not been sharp at all, among other issues. We keep muddling through it but seems like it could go south in any game.
Fortunately, great hitting and defense provide a lot!!
