Next month marks the 40th anniversary of two landmark events of American popular culture: the assassination of pioneering gay politician Harvey Milk, and the mass suicide of 900 members of the Peoples Temple cult.
If you remember anything about the mass suicide, it’s probably that cult leader Jim Jones was a fundamentalist Christian demon whose Bible-thumping berated brainwashed followers into drinking cyanide-laced Kool-Aid.
Harvey Milk, by contrast, is a folk hero. The San Francisco supervisor became a gay-rights saint because he was martyred by a right-wing fanatic.
That’s the received history in both cases. But according to author Daniel Flynn, it’s scarcely truth at all, but rather propaganda. And the way history remembers these men and the time and place that made them offers a dire warning to us today.

From everything I’ve read, Harvey Milk is the ultimate winner of the Vic Morrow exact wrong place, exact wrong time award. Every indication is that if Milk had stayed in his office, he would have lived through that day. White was not gunning for him.
Wasn’t there something about Milk taking action to divert legal accusations against Jones?
I remember the video of all those bodies, seem just like yesterday.
Bottom line: anyone who trusts, believes or is influenced by a liberal is a fool.
Jim Jones and Harvey Milk may have even had a ‘thing’.
Jim Jones DID sodomize men in the Peoples’ Temple including the doc who mixed up the poison punch.
Some were shot. Armed guards stood over the masses and coerced them to comply. Mothers forced their crying children to comply.
The Commie loyalists of the Peoples Temple even killed people stateside after the Jonestown massacre.
Those that didn’t were shot.
It’s irresponsible to call this simply a mass suicide.

I started off thinking this was a leftist propaganda piece of crap. Either it is or is - as I said - badly written.
Plenty of Democrats running interference for Jim Jones but also gay serial killer John Wayne Gacy.
