For many brides what to wear on their big day is one of the most important decisions they'll make. Ivory or white? A-line or mermaid? Long or short? Fitted or puffy?
But for Princess Eugenie there was an extra factor at play.
The Queen's granddaughter had major surgery on her back to treat a curvature of the spine at the age of 12.
Sixteen years on, and the princess chose to wear a wedding dress that showed her scar, saying she hoped it would honour those who had helped her and inspire others with the condition of scoliosis.
"I had an operation when I was 12 on my back, and you'll see on Friday, but it's a lovely way to honour the people who looked after me and a way of standing up for young people who also go through this," she told ITV's This Morning.
"I think you can change the way beauty is, and you can show people your scars and I think it's really special to stand up for that."

What a lovely young lady.
Honestly, I think the concept is kind of weird, but there’s nothing wrong with how she looks. It sure is better than showing a lot of tattoos!
I think scoliosis is fairly common.
I opened this to see who she is. Every day we see stories about the british ‘royal’ family.
I don’t care about them PERIOD!
Would like to see more about our FIRST FAMILY though.
Even better that she’s using her wedding (and the publicity) as an opportunity to raise money for the hospital that treated her.
She sounds like an old geezer wanted to show off his battle scars.
I think it’s trashy.
Honey Boo Boo trashy.
I have a scar just like hers....but I’m an old white guy and butt ugly!
There is an actress, Kristin Kreuk whose butt sticks out a bit. The reason she says it is because she had scoliosis and had to drop gymnastics.
It is actually attractive until you notice her stomach protrudes just a bit on the other side. Well all in all it helps more than harm. In other words when she is wearing light colored spandex, she looks hot!
Good for her! And she is rather pretty!
I wish her and her new husband the best!
God bless my distant cousin on her wedding day. I also have same affliction. Our 1 year old granddaughter is having surgery for tethered spine, also has curved spine. My mom does too. Seems to be in our dna.
yep - but for most people it’s less then 15-20% curvature. That is the cutoff range for when a doctor will recommend any activities beyond physical therapy. My youngest has something like 8% and was having some pain, but simple stretching exercises went a long way to making her feel much better.
At least her dress has sleeves and doesn’t look like a nightgown.
It was a beautiful, spirit-filled wedding. Her decision demonstrates that she is not just a spoiled rich girl, but someone who thinks of others. I’m so glad I watched the ceremony.
Her scar actually looks just fine, a very talented surgeon stitched her up. Shes a very pretty bride.
I agree with others, what I find truly appalling is a heavily tattooed bride in a wedding gown; she might as well just hang a sign on her back that says I Am Trailer Trash.

Yes, I think you're correct. Some must have it worse than others. I was told I HAD Scoliosis a few years back...and I'm in my 60's...
She’s your distant cousin?
I hope your little grand-daughter’s surgery goes well.
I am guessing that if she was American that scar would either not be there at all, or more likely it would be four small holes. But she lives in the world of socialized medicine.
