Jordan can resign when he is falsely accused of sexual assault.
Whether you agree with his views on Kavanaugh’s rebuttal or not, he, Peterson, lays out his thoughts in a logical manner. Many may disagree, but he looks at it from a little different viewpoint than through the American political lense. I would hope that members of FR here would read his entire article before any discussion.
People jumping to the wrong conclusions with misinformation is a mainstay at FR.
That streak of yellow is really wide.
He could admit he is in favor of cutting and running every time there is adversary.
But he lacks the courage to even do that.
Having listened to Peterson many hours, I was not disturbed by his tweets. He is nothing, if not honorable. I disagree with some of his stuff, but I have a good deal of respect for him, and I have enough discernment to be able to consume the healthy information he delivers, and spit out the junk. I would recommend him unreservedly, to any and all.
Jeez what a load of blather. Why not just say, “I may have spoken too soon” and then two paragraphs about how things look now, after both Trump and Kavanaugh, as well as McConnell and Grassley, have all demonstrated their manly stamina, principles and courage.
Disappointed in Jordan for all this “yes, but”, tap dancing and navel gazing from one who is usually a proponent of personal responsibility.
Seems to be based on a very weak premise—the premise that public support of Kavanaugh is low.
First, if it is low it won’t hold.
Second, individuals Justices are not regarded to any meaningful extent over time by most of the public and they remain out of public view.
I read this earlier tonight. I think, on this one, Dr. Peterson had a clunker. But he’s never claimed infallibility, and I’ve never ascribed it to him.
Thanks so much for posting this. When I read about his tweet, it didn’t sound at all like Peterson because of his adage:
dont apologize if you havent done anything wrong.
He was posed with a question indicating that either result was bad and was seeking a middle ground, a 3rd alternative.
I agree that it was more problematic, and the correct response would probably have been not to accept the premise that being confirmed and assuming the post was unacceptable. That is one of the straw men that leftists always use, to assume a false premise and ask one to defend it. But it was a 3rd alternative and that is what was requested of him. He is also right that twitter was the wrong place for a thought experiment.
I’m not sure that Dr. Peterson is fully aware of the whole Alinski strategy employed by the left. Any meager compromise, blink or flinch is taken as an invitation for more violence, vitriol, deceit and outright criminality.
When considering the left, he is much more inclined to consider them as “classical liberals”, which very accurately describes our founding fathers. That is not what we are dealing with. He is aware of the destructive malice of leftists in academia, but does not seem to realize that the political leftists make the academic leftists look like pussy cats.
Peterson is absolutely brilliant within his “lane”, which is as an academic psychologist looking at the destructiveness of certain ideologies, and how to combat them mostly on an individual level. But as far as politics go, particularly American politics, not sure he’s really thought things through very far, and this tweet was absolutely idiotic, even as a “thought experiment”.
A man who doesn't have his head still up his butt would say "my head was up my butt."
It's one of those things where you transcend it by accepting it.
I would have preferred something more along the lines of "I was probably wrong." Also, I would add a two word objection to Peterson's "resign after confirmation" tweet: Clarence Thomas.
I like Jordan Peterson, but I utterly reject his tone. (Yes I did read it.) I took particular exception with his “Kavanaugh compromised himself” paragraph near the end, and it made me damned angry to read.
Jordan Peterson is a thoughtful person who views issues in all the shades of gray.
But in this, I see it as a completely manichean black and white issue. Jordan Peterson, in his role as intellectual philosopher, is not comfortable with war, and we are at war. This is not a condemnation of Jordan Peterson even as I reject his analysis. What happened in this battle is not his terrain in my opinion.
We are at war with the Left. Being a philosopher is fine, but when battle lines are drawn, philosophy is useless, and battle lines were indeed drawn.
When this came out at the last minute, and I found out Feinstein had held on to this for two months, I dismissed it out of hand, because that simple fact alone tells you it was a political ploy.
Then, she couldn’t fly? She had claustrophobia? She was already holed up in Rehoboth Beach, DE with a lifelong friend Monica Mclean (who she coached on passing a polygraph at a younger age so the woman could obtain an FBI job, and whose lawyer is also the lawyer for ANDREW MCCABE) when she said she couldn’t get to the hearings and asked for a delay. A 2 1/2 hour drive.
And then, watching how they shifted the narrative (when it became clear Ford was an utter and complete fraud and her story, already full of holes to start with, completely unraveled) from sexual assault to drinking and temperament really sealed it for me and the vast majority of NORMAL people.
For the Left, the Clarence Thomas approach didn’t work, so they went to plan B that worked so well on another honorable man, Admiral Ronny Jackson who Trump nominated for VA Director, accusations of alcohol abuse.
When someone lies to my face, I tend to be less willing to take anything they say at face value. Ford flat out lied on damn near everything.
So, no.
As much as I respect and like Jordan Peterson, he should SIT ON HIS PEN FOR THIS ISSUE. Saying Kavanaugh “compromised himself” with his anger, Kavanaugh should have been nuclear weapon grade angry, talk of farts and other stuff, drinking and anything else at the age of 16.
NORMAL people watched this, and it is pretty clear to RATIONAL people that this was a politically orchestrated LYNCHING of an INNOCENT man for political purposes, it was a shameful travesty, and the reaction to it WAS, and SHOULD BE to FIGHT BACK with every breath.
Thank GOD we have a President with a spine, and a candidate who took strength from that. Peterson is a philosopher whose job it is to wring his hands.
He should wring his hands and stay the hell out of it.
He should keep his "thought experiments" to himself; especially when he neither understands, nor has any factual knowledge about American politics/sentiment/the consequences for Kavanaugh AND for himself for posting this inane crap.
And though you and perhaps some other Peterson fanboys will make excuses for him and still slavishly laud him, hopefully there are others, who follow him, for whom the veil of hero worship will fall.
I like Peterson but imo he did not analyze this correctly. This issue is not as complex as he thinks and can be resolved simply by applying basic principles. Are the allegations true? In this case the accuser has changed her story numerous times and the people she claimed could corroborate her story did not do so under oath. Factoring in the obvious political motives for making the accusation it is highly likely it is untrue. The right thing to do in this case to continue the process, appoint him to the court, and punish those who lied under oath.
Well as a research scientist ( which he isn’t) he failed to do one critical thing.....have all the facts
bump for later...
Watch his full appearance on the Bill Maher show and you see an absolute beta slobbering to convince all the liberals on the panel how he agrees that Trump is atrocious.
I’ve listened to hours of his lectures, and enjoyed them, but almost no Canadians, it appears, are the stout conservatives we’d like them to be.
Which just happened to come off at the time as advocating against Kavanaugh. Now that he can mitigate the damage, he says it was all a thought experiment.
If I had said of 9/11, “This is our chickens coming home to roost,” and then I later said it was a thought experiment, look at how I am perfectly developing a situation where I can say anything, try to push events in any direction, and deny responsibility for it later because I am a thought experimenter.
Of course if you take this at the face value he offers it, then nobody should ever listen to him ever again, because he is openly admitting he talks out of his ass, says stuff which he has no idea is correct or incorrect, and he will backpedal on it at the first sign of resistance. Why bother even listening to him?
This guy has all the hallmarks of a Bill Kristol in the making. The only difference is, he won’t take the consequences of his proclamations.
I’ll take his almighty holiness, the God Emperor of the United State’s version - be right all the time, always win, and afterward laugh at your enemies as you cheer on your team’s victory.
