Why the Space Tourism Industry Needs Flight Attendants (Op-Ed)

Flight attendants are professionals whose expertise is essential to in-flight safety. Without their help, passengers could jeopardize their health and risk their lives by flying the not-so-friendly skies. For example, passengers would not necessarily know where to find or how to use safety equipment like oxygen masks and flotation devices in case of an emergency...

Excellent flight crews make both spaceflight and ordinary airplane flights possible both before and after a spacecraft or an airplane leaves the ground. For example, the Delta Air Lines Flight Attendant Training Center has a 1 percent acceptance rate for new flight attendants. In six weeks, students learn federal aviation regulations, how to defend themselves and others against unruly passengers and hijackers, how to evacuate on water and land, how to handle medical emergencies, and how to use all the equipment at their disposal to assist passengers during a flight.

What, then, will be the role of flight attendants in this new era of transportation and space exploration? Will there be room enough for them to assume their role as vital workers?

Where, for that matter, is the school that will teach this elite corps of astronaut flight attendants? Will NASA and the FAA start or subsidize this academy? Will spaceflight attendants go through the same kind of training as NASA's astronauts? And will there be enough trained flight attendants to meet the demands of pilots and passengers once the space tourism industry finally takes flight?

Before civilians can start booking spaceflights, we should confirm the availability of flight attendants — and make sure there's room for them aboard the spacecraft — to bring additional safety and security to flights that are more treacherous than we may choose to believe.

Try giving tea or coffee to the passengers where everything floats away...

:)

It’d be a short-lived career, yes? Due to multiple radiation dose exposures similar to what astronauts experience?

Yep in the event of an emergency in outer space, knowing where the flotation devices are would be a definite plus. Those emergency exits, too.

>>how to defend themselves and others against unruly passengers and hijackers

not much you can do with hijackers on a space tourist flight

neutralize the threat or listen to their demands

I wonder if it'll resemble the flight attendants on Lucky Airlines in Putney Swope.

Why do they need flight attendants? The passenger preparation for the flight should be enough. This is how you eat, this is where everything is, this is how you go to the bathroom. This is your space suit and this is what not to touch while in it. Here is the escape pod which you will enter that of course will not save you, however you will have a great view of space while you run out of oxygen.

Not much more to it than that. For each flight, someone from the flight crew will be the representative to the passengers, strictly for consistency.

The space station has had space tourists and there was no cocktail waitress/receptionist/nurse/sales lady on board.

On space flights weight (mass, actually) will have to be managed carefully. More mass means more fuel is needed. Every extra ounce matters! The flight attendants should be attired with that in mind.

Not necessarily, I dont know but offer the following for consideration.

One of my uncles did emergency repair work for nuclear power companies. He was pretty much on call at all times. When he went in, the location of failure or type of failure would often expose him to a high level of radiation. He might only wind up working for 20 minutes before he reached maximum safe exposure levels then would turn the problem over to a team member and go back home. Despite having only worked for 20 minutes, he was still paid for a whole day.

Its possible that pilots and attendants might only work one flight a week or some similar rotation yet still get paid for a full week.
