AUSTIN Five Austin police cadets had to receive medical treatment on Monday evening -- the first day of the academy.
One cadet remained in the hospital Monday, but that persons condition was not immediately released.
According to Austin police, the cadets became ill during a physical fitness exam. The other cadets were treated and released.

The important thing is that the instructors were able to go home to their families.
The only major city police force I have seen that has a higher body mass index than the Austin PD is the Houston PD.

Probably what we call down south, here, “big ol’ boys”. With all our southern fried cookin’, they’re apt to carry a lot of weight “out front.” They’re big and imposing, but unless they decide to sit on someone, that weight out front can be a bit of a hindrance to runnin’ down the bad guys. Austin is a liberal city but oddly has a first class and very professional police force out on the beat. At the top it is very political but the cops out on the ground are some of the best in the state of texas. They have extremely high standards for ability and physical standards. If u can not meet the standards u are gone.
