The decade-old program has been on hold since 2016 amid concerns that immigrant recruits were not being screened well enough, and security threats were slipping through the system. Defense officials shored up the vetting process, and planned to relaunch the program earlier this month. But there was an unexpected barrier when Homeland Security officials said they would not be able to protect new immigrant recruits from being deported when their temporary visas expired after they signed a contract to join the military, the U.S. officials said. They were not authorized to publicly describe internal discussions and spoke on condition of anonymity.
The program is called Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest program, or MAVNI. The plan to restart it was backed by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, who believes that noncitizens can bring key skills, language abilities, and cultural knowledge to the military

There’s room for immigrants in our military. I call it a pathway to citizenship.
I admit, I prefer well-meaning, battle-ready immigrants than transgendered citizens.
To serve.
Hi.
“Theres room for immigrants in our military. I call it a pathway to citizenship.”
Yep, since 1776.

Legal immigrants aka green card-holders, obviously yes. There were multiple times during the Iraq War, they were sworn in as US citizens while we were at war. Rumsfeld even swore in more than a few when he visited the front lines. The one group (as usual) the stupid liberal AP was referring to were the illegals..
We should let zero immigrants in until we deport every last illegal and visa over-stayer out.
Bummer.
DACA are still illegal aliens.
It is illegal for illegal aliens to enlist.
We should not be giving waivers based on the illegal DACA program started illegally by an illegal President for illegal aliens.
bump.
Rome fell because it army was all foreigners ..
So the left wants to follow that path .
Brain dead media types peddles their lies .
Agree 100%!
Not if the immigrant recruit can't swear an absolute oath and allegiance to the flag of the United States and to all of its laws and swear to forsake any and all other oaths and allegiances to any other country or nation and can complete a battery of tests that show they know and understand our US Constitution and can communicate both in writing and speaking of the English language. If not then a big fat NO.
My uncle and my mother were born in Canada. During WWII, my uncle enlisted. Because they didn’t have an official entry date for him, the story goes that they took my uncle to Niagara Falls, had him walk across the bridge to the Canadian side, then walk back to the U.S. so he’d have an entry date. Never did find out if he ever became a citizen. He and his wife lived in California for many years, and only came back in 1962 or 63, when he got sick and ended up in the VA Hospital in Batavia, NY where he died in 1964. He was only 48 when he died. I was a junior in high school.
“and security threats were slipping through the system”
Think one of them named Nidal Hasan is still processing oxygen after being the first commissioned officer that I’ve ever heard of mass murdering other American soldiers.
Sorta makes the case, doesn’t it?
