Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke says the U.S. Navy can blockade Russia if needed to keep it from controlling energy supplies in the Middle East as it does in Europe.
"The United States has that ability, with our Navy, to make sure the sea lanes are open..." Zinke said on Friday at an industry event in Pittsburgh hosted by the Consumer Energy Alliance.
He was there to explain why hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, and the shale energy boom has given the U.S. an edge over its rivals Russia and Iran, by making the U.S. less dependent on foreign sources of energy.
"Russia is a one trick pony," Zinke said, explaining that its economy hinges on its ability to sell energy. "I believe the reason they are in the Middle East is they want to broker energy just like they do in eastern Europe, the southern belly of Europe."
President Trump wants the European Union to buy more U.S. natural gas to diversify the continent's energy supply away from Russia.

How does a blockade keep the sea lanes open?
That would be idiotic.
Isn’t a blockade traditionally considered an act of war?
Yes, it would. But without McCain around to suggest over-aggressive military stupidity, it's nice to see that someone stepped up for him.
Yes, a blockade is an act of war.
With warmonger McCain dead, someone has to pick up the slack.
I thought we left this Neo-Con crap behind?
Notice the lack of talking about blockading China, which is a FAR bigger potential threat.
Sounds as dicey as all hell. It would leave Russia with very little choice.
Why is the Secretary of the Interior commenting on Department of Defense matters?
He’s a 20+ year Navy guy and served on the Armed Services Committee. Teamed with McCain to urge American ground forces be used in the Middle East.
It would be impossible to blockade Russia.
It was hard enough to blockade Cuba.
I spent a year off the coast of Cuba on a destroyer in 1962. I couldn’t imagine the number of ships needed to blockade Russia.
The author has no concept of what a Naval Blockade requires in ships and manpower.
The Spirit of Alfred Thayer Mahan Lives On
You want a war with Russia, put your sons and daughters on the front line first.
Let’s have a war with Iran..!!!
Let’s have a war with Russia..!
These war mongers are nuts.
Russia Russia Russia. Oh, did I mention Russia? They are the focus of all the misdirection.
How about China, China, China.
How about SA, SA, SA.
How about DC, DC, DC.
How about Federal Reserve, Federal Reserve, Federal Reserve.
How about _MORE_ USConstitution, USConstitution, USConstitution.
You want to screw with Russia? Three words. Liquid Natural Gas. Threaten to open new markets to Europe and the Russians will freak. How do I know? If you watch RT in the proper context, its Putinvision, you see lots of negative coverage of fracking. The same with Al Queda, I mean Al Jazeera TV. US energy production scares them because our good fortune is a threat to any influence they have.
Asymmetric, is less costly, safer, and we make some bucks while we are doing it.
Isnt a blockade traditionally considered an act of war?
Yes it is.
Why are people pushing the US to go to war with Russia?
The administration can “punish” Russia without starting WWIII
How does a blockade keep the sea lanes open?
> That’s why he’s secretary of the INTERIOR. :)
My mother and I stood at the Malecon in Havana and we could see the navy ships offshore. My mother was praying that the bombing would start. My half brother had taken part in the Bay of Pigs invasion the year before and was captured. We were able to leave in ‘65. Thank God!
