PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. Should students get half credit for an assignment they didnt even turn in? A former St. Lucie County teacher doesnt think so.
Thats why she wrote a goodbye message to her eighth graders on a white board saying, "Bye Kids, Mrs. Tirado loves you and wishes you the best in life! I have been fired for refusing to give you a 50% for not handing anything in. 💓 Mrs. Tirado"
Diane Tirado has been a teacher for years, but she started at West Gate K-8 School in Port St. Lucie in August as an eighth grade U.S. history teacher.
"Teaching is a calling for me," she said.
She assigned an explorer notebook project, which she said she gave students two weeks to complete.
When several students didnt turn it in, Tirado found out about what she calls a "no zero" policy, which is reflected in the West Gate student and parent handbook. Below the grading rubric, in red lettering, the handbook states "NO ZEROS- LOWEST POSSIBLE GRADE IS 50%"

My brother teaches in a district that just instituted this insanity. He’s furious. It’s considered one of the best districts in the state too
Yes, and some schools have a dozen "valedictorians." Mathematically possible, but highly unprobable.
I applaud Ms. Tirano.I taught middle school science for 35 years and can honestly say I was surrounded by liberal IDIOTS.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
Sometime, somewhere, somehow, kids need to learn that their actions or inactions have consequences.
I would have done the same thing as this teacher.
pathetic school system, set up to FAIL, because they get funding if they PASS the kids so the teachers aren’t allowed to fail them.
I had 2 kids in public school in orlando and what.a.joke it is. They both failed 11th grade and were allowed to come back for 12th grade. One left completely and the other is now in 12th, doing nothing, and there’s no recourse.
BTW, where’s DeVos? Where’s a shake up in public schools?
I went to a graduation in June. The valedictorian gave a speech. It was a rah-rah sis-boom-bah speech. I reckon good grades aren’t necessarily a standard for impressive public speaking, or even content selection. Perhaps a thespian should be selected to recite something with a little meat in it.
I have a professor friend who says his grading software will not allow him to give a failing grade. School policy, he discovered.

Much to the disappointment of the parents, children perform poorly in school because of laziness, or lack of motivation, or other things that are really under parent/child control but both choose not to exercise control over it. The children will usually reach a realization when into their 30s and will think I Shoulda-Woulda-Coulda. Every payday for the rest of their lives, including into retirement they will be reminded of their lack of due diligence when they had the energy and the time to exercise due diligence. Be prepared.
Its been years since teachers have been allowed to give anything below a 70 much less a 0.
I’d say it depends on the school, and district. In my suburban Houston community, I can attest that all 3 of my kids have received 0’s. Last year, and one even this year (failure to turn in an assignment). I’d chewed their butt, but since I’m divorced, can’t really punish them since they live with their mother.
No Zero’s? Soooo what does the Zero’s posses? Not that a Zero could ever posses anything.
Good grief.
If they did not turn in the work they should get the incomplete, which carries a zero. Solved.
When I attended a local community college a few years after my time in the service the P.C. had already begun. There was no fail. Grading was credit, credit with honors, credit with high honors and deferred credit. A DCR could be retaken until passed (if you paid again, of course).
This is lunacy.
I taught high school teacher for 8 years. I now run an academic support program, working with middle, high school and college students across the country to help them navigate dysfunctional schools.
For middle and high school students, we view their gradebooks weekly. So for every student, we thereby know about the grading behaviors of 7 or 8 teachers. So I know about the behavior of a lot of teachers.
Some observations:
- most county schools limit the impact of homework to 0 or 5% of grades
- many county schools calculate an F as 50 or even 65%, which means that a zero is worth 50 or 65%.
- most teachers do not grade student work for 1-4+ weeks, rendering assignment, essay, and formal assessment feedback irrelevant to students.
- many teachers have no clue as to the impact of grade weighting; we see all the time that they will leave a 40% weighted category with only 1 or 2 assessments, which is insanely unfair to students.
- overall, I calculate only a quarter of grade 6-12 teachers as effective, and that’s at best.
agenda pushed by leftists who do nothing but pander and run things to match their own uselessness
leftists only care about indoctrination and having sheep to be herded
and the RATS wonder why we are behind so many countries scholastically...
i know, MORE TAXES!!!
