PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. Should students get half credit for an assignment they didnt even turn in? A former St. Lucie County teacher doesnt think so.
Thats why she wrote a goodbye message to her eighth graders on a white board saying, "Bye Kids, Mrs. Tirado loves you and wishes you the best in life! I have been fired for refusing to give you a 50% for not handing anything in. 💓 Mrs. Tirado"
Diane Tirado has been a teacher for years, but she started at West Gate K-8 School in Port St. Lucie in August as an eighth grade U.S. history teacher.
"Teaching is a calling for me," she said.
She assigned an explorer notebook project, which she said she gave students two weeks to complete.
When several students didnt turn it in, Tirado found out about what she calls a "no zero" policy, which is reflected in the West Gate student and parent handbook. Below the grading rubric, in red lettering, the handbook states "NO ZEROS- LOWEST POSSIBLE GRADE IS 50%"

Great...now the libs are teaching that 1 - 1 = 1/2
She should have given them -100s.
0s should be for people who turn in their work but get everything wrong.
I am getting tired of this excuse of “You don’t know what’s going on in their home” as if all children are exposed to horrible parenting.
That USED TO BE a non-issue- parents behaved responsibly and they taught their kids to behave responsibly.
Decades of liberalism has led to this.
Public schools engage in wholesale child abuse.... routinely...
yes at my son’s school he received zeros whenever he failed to turn in assignments. He got an F in his second quarter humanities, likewise in the year before.
I think he gets it now...a ZERO will completely destroy your average.
Had I not turned in an assignment and still got a 50%, not only would the teach have felt the wrath of my dad but I'd still be grounded today........
A zero be like....raycis....and sh-t.
Put this stupidity right along side of participation trophies. For those idiots who tell me “Everyone’s a winner!”, their kids are going to get a hard punch in the nose when they try to find a job.

And everyone too chicken-s* to speak-out, “Maybe we should call CPS, being ‘so horrible\bad’, eh?”

Doesn’t happen in a vacuum....Decades of Leftism and ZERO push-back (when was the last time the abolition of the DoEd was brought up? Hell, is it even a plank of the (R) party anymore??)
Everyone too happy w/ the *cheap* (when you’re stealing your neighbors property) “child-care”. “It’s not MY school\child that’s the\a problem, it’s YOURS”.
Dude you so nailed it! That teacher had said the same thing just with out the damn trophies!
It’s been years since teachers have been allowed to give anything below a 70 much less a 0. No one fails and everyone gets a participation ribbon. The latest is HS not recognizing valedictorians.
” The latest is HS not recognizing valedictorians.”

Some still do recognize valedictorians.
.
My friend is an excellent HS Art teacher. She tells me that of those who are punkish,
lousy students she barely passes them because she doesnt want them retaking her class and being the same thorny problem childs again.

“I think he gets it now...a ZERO will completely destroy your average.”
It took my now 17 year old 3 years of middle school to learn this lesson.
True words words
LOL-that is exactly the years where my son got the reality check
My children got zeroes if they did not turn work in. Why should they get a grade if they did not do the work? They thought it was no big deal until that zero was figured into their average. Then the wailing and gnashings began. My response,”Tough noogies. You were warned.” Lesson learned. From that point the work did get done.
PS. They went to Port St. Lucie schools but not this one.
