A sexy Halloween costume inspired by the dystopian novel and TV series The Handmaids Tale is no longer being sold after receiving a barrage of online criticism for sexualizing the shows subject matter women subjugated by an oppressive government.
The online retailer Yandy, which designed and sold the costume, issued an apology Thursday following the backlash. Over the last few hours, it has become obvious that [the costume] is being seen as a symbol of womens oppression, rather than empowerment, the company wrote in a statement shared on Twitter.
This is unfortunate as it was not our intention on any level. Our initial inspiration to create the piece was through witnessing its use in recent months as a powerful protest image, the statement continued. Given the sincere, heartfelt response, supported by numerous personal stories weve received, we are removing the costume from our site.
Before being taken down, the costumes product description read: An upsetting dystopian future has emerged where women no longer have a say. However, we say be bold and speak your mind in this exclusive Brave Red Maiden costume featuring a red mini dress, a matching cloak with an attached hood, and a white bonnet headpiece.

This thread is useless without pictures!
Leftism is a cult. It would be nice if they'd settle for covering their ears and eyes like the hair krishnas do when you challenge their theology, but no - leftists are also fascistic. Like muzz slimes.
Handmaid Tale is political. It’s costumes were political at the Kavanaugh hearings. What, there cannot possibly be a counter political costume? This isn’t even racist, or anti-someone’s culture!
Liberals are dangerous.
Hellloooooo? ALL COSTUMES MADE FOR WOMEN FOR HALLOWEEN ARE SEXY
You wont find a nun costume or a nurse costume or any costume that doesnt say Sexy Nun or Sexy Nurse etc right on the package.
This was banned? ‘Tis a bit fetching, though.
What is that an amish hooker?
Yeah, I have yet to see a woman’s Halloween costume labeled, “Bitter, angry Shrew” or “Porcine, angry Gender Studies Professor.”
I’ve been able to make it through one single episode of the Handmaid’s Tale, and will just say that it’s a pretty marginalized Sci-Fi-related story that just doesn’t deliver. The one I watched had something to do with Canada, and that that was the only place where things seemed to run normally in this ‘modern’ world.
If you took Dallas, Planet of the Apes, Jane Austen novels, and blended them into a three-quarter speed sci-fi soap opera....this is the result. Frankly, I think the audience is about 90-percent women (under the age of forty).
But you WILL see
Sexy Nurse, size 3xxx
But apparently a sexy Handmaiden is just too sacreligious and making a mockery of the #MeToo movement.
Anyhow, I like it!
I think I'll order my wife to wear one.
EGAD!
So the costume company will be limited to sexy nurse, sexy secretary and sexy Melania Trump (which is exactly the same as just plain Melania Trump).
I tried to watch it as well. If a show is entertaining, I can look past the politics and enjoy it. Key word though is "entertaining."
Handmaid's Tale just felt too dated to the 1980s, like it was trying too hard to imagine the fundamentalist Christian dystopia that liberals believed would happen during the Reagan Years, that never came to pass, and now feels preposterous.
I suspect most viewers of the Handmaids Tale watch it with their cats...
And the cats are just thinking “It’s dinner time, you stupid XXXX. Quit watching this drivel and get my Meow Mix.”
Annnnnd I mis-read ‘Tis
I thought sex was the whole framework of The Handmaid’s Tale. Just not “fun” sex I guess.
