How the U.S. Is Recovering Oil from a Nuked Warship: Prinz Eugen, once the pride [tr]

The U.S. military is trying to recover the oil form a ship that's been underwater for 72 years. In an interesting twist, it's not even an American warship.

The United States captured the German heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen as a war prize after the end of World War II. The Prinz Eugen capsized in 1946 after being nuked—twice—during the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll. For decades, experts have feared that the radioactive ship's oil might leak into the Pacific. Now the Pentagon is trying to do something about it.

I wonder how much oil remains onboard the Arizona.

If you visit the memorial, take note of the “tears of the Arizona” drips of black oil coming to the surface.

Radioactive isn’t the problem. They are worried about the environmental damage from the oil.

Think Exxon Valdez.

LOL!

Where did it say the oil was radioactive!

If you do, be sure and post them here.

As for recovering the oil, they’re just doing their enviro-whacko due diligence. I’m surprised they haven’t pumped out the Arizona yet ... or maybe they have? I forget.

Just tell the Indonesians where to find her, I’m sure they’ll have her parted out into razor blades and such in no time (much like poor HMS Exeter)

I don't know the exact amount but it's ALOT, and the ship is rusting away. When the fuel bunkers finally collapse there is a fear there will be an environmental disaster!

Prinz Eugen was part of the “Channel Dash”. So were Scharnhorst and Gneisenau.

The Channel Dash - Operation Cerberus - is legendary (or infamous, to the Brits).

Interestingly enough, congress passed a law forbidding inspecting cars from Japan for radioactivity after Fukushima.

They really are trying to kill us all.

Wife and I visited Pearl and toured the Arizona Memorial some years back.

There was a rumor that among the Navy's solution to the failing wreck was to build a cement sarcophagus around and over the ship.

Because of local and stateside politics, the Navy's plans have been frozen at the “idea” stage.

I do recall that the Arizona had a full bunker on December 7th. I believe this was about 2,100,000 gallons of 420 cSt heavy oil.

It’s an excellent idea. I’ve read, and it makes sense, that any radioactive waste that leaks out would be diluted to the point of being not even negligible.

I forgot, wasn’t the Valdez sweet oil, ie no refined, there for just like the oil spill a few years ago in the gulf, it dissipates naturally since sweet oil leaks all the time from the ocean floor...

I should add, even if the oil had been removed from the Arizona, there would still be ‘weeps” of oil. As water enters the fuel tanks, the remaining oil would naturally float to the top of the water.

It didn’t. We were referring to the leakage of the Japanese nuclear reactor.

So under President Trump’s ‘Leave No Oil Behind’ program, we will slant drill the ship to recover the valuable oil!

“It didn’t. We were referring to the leakage of the Japanese nuclear reactor.”

Then why were y’all referring to the oil as radioactive?

Nuked twice and didn’t even spring an oil leak. That’s some solid engineering. Now, my neighbors old Jaguar on the other hand (not even nuked once)...

“In a location several miles deep, with no currents, in non-degradable containers, maybe. At a subduction zone, where it gets recycled into the underlying magma over millions of years.”

As the radioactive material sank into the Earth’s mantle the radioactive decay would generate heat and help keep the Earth’s core molten and preserve the magnetic field and protect the atmosphere from being stripped away by the solar wind.
