There was a rumor that among the Navy's solution to the failing wreck was to build a cement sarcophagus around and over the ship.
Because of local and stateside politics, the Navy's plans have been frozen at the “idea” stage.
I do recall that the Arizona had a full bunker on December 7th. I believe this was about 2,100,000 gallons of 420 cSt heavy oil.
I should add, even if the oil had been removed from the Arizona, there would still be ‘weeps” of oil. As water enters the fuel tanks, the remaining oil would naturally float to the top of the water.
I knew it was a lot. WOW, that is massive and most it is probably still there.

We are talking about a Battle Ship here. That would be Huge! All of that construction around that could cause the fuel bunkers to rupture!
