FULL TITLE: Patrick Mouratoglou admits he WAS 'coaching' Serena during the controversial US Open final but says he doesn't believe Williams saw him
Patrick Mouratoglou has admitted to coaching Serena Williams during the US Open final but believes she didn't see him - which is why she became so enraged at the umpire.
Williams has made headlines for coming to blows with umpire Carlos Ramos after he gave her a coaching violation in the second set.
The tennis legend, who was then docked a point after she smashed her racket, told Ramos she would rather lose than cheat.
'I'm honest, I was coaching,' Mouratoglou said after the game. 'I don't think she looked at me, so that's why she didn't even think I was.'
But Mouratoglou claims that Sascha Bajin, champion Naomi Osaka's coach, was also 'coaching every point too'.

Neither can I.
I saw the video of the coach. He admitted that he had been coaching from the sidelines, but he said that it was commonplace, and that he had never been penalized for it in the past. Whether Serena saw him or not, and whether seeing his signaled advice would have affected her play, I don't know.
Rarely mentioned in all this criticism of Serena is that after she lost, she immediately approached the net and embraced her opponent. That sure looked like losing graciously to me.

Serena claimed that men who have acted in a similar manner have not be penalized as severely. If true, she may have had a bit of a point. A game loss penalty is harsh.
However, she just wouldn’t let it go, and left the official no other real option.
Maybe those men also didn’t act like she did?
The female announcer at the time of the rant said that yes the men argue and yell and stuff, but it is during the first warning or maybe the second penalty (a point I think). She said that the men don’t argue like that when it would cause a third penalty (a game).
John McEnroe acted bad back in the day
Ilie Nastase made McEnroe look like a choir boy.
For McEnroe it was schtick. People watched his matches just waiting for him to explode on a linesman or other official. It’s like the fans that go to a hockey game to see a fight. In Serena’s case, she was losing and the on court drama was meant to distract her opponent and give her an entrance back into the match. She is also a big phony with her “so nice” press conferences and interviews. She is a nasty, egotistical person whose real character surfaces on occasion and it’s not pretty.
That’s why I included the phrase “She claimed...”
Men normally wouldn’t get so upset about a mere warning, or a point penalty. A man would normally deny the allegation of coaching and move on.
I think what it boils down to is that the coach does not have to focus on, for example, actually catching up to and hitting the ball, allowing him (in this instance) to focus on strategy, positioning, etc., and then relay that info. back to his player. That makes the effort sort of a “two-on-one” attack on the opponent.
Now, I would have no problem if coaching is allowed on BOTH sides of the net, but I guess tennis is supposed to be “pure” one-on one. If that’s what the organization sponsoring or regulating the match wants, then it’s up to them, not me. If somehow that makes matches less entertaining, maybe I won’t watch, but in fact it makes little difference to me.
The interesting thing in this case is that Serena’s coach claims the opponent was getting coached too. Maybe Serena’s coach was just more blatant about it? I’ve not seen video addressing this point or making a comparison.
It's the snooty euro's trying to prove Americans are all loud obnoxious boors. In truth, too many of the crowd at this match were just that, and Serena's behavior as things went on kept up.
However, crowds' behavior at Euro (and other) soccer matches is sometimes known to devolve into full blown riots, so this is a case of the pot calling the kettle black, and then some...
A poster on another thread documented that McEnroe on at least one occasion did persist in bad behavior and received the same sequence: Warning, later a point loss, finally a game loss. I believe it was Jimmy Connors who said he was not so stupid as to argue himself into a $100k loss... Ie., he knew when to shut up.

Serena’s relatives and fans were almost angry when she would win a point or a game. Sort of the “take that!” type of reaction against the other opponent.
Osaka’s relatives and fans were much more subdued. Her mom hardly showed any reaction at all! Except at the very end with the hug and the tears. I can only imagine the amount of parental pride she has with her 20-year-old daughter, no doubt thinking back to all of the early lessons and practices and games.
Lot’s more wins to come I imagine.
The only reason why I watched the match was, the day before the sports radio guys were talking about her. Some media person asked her “What message to you have for Serena?” It almost sounded like they were trying to get her to trash-talk Serena.
Osaka replied “I love you Serena!”
Lousy Sportsmanship.
And not for the first time.
End of story.
Serena displays toxic masculinity.
