What if Pence was REALLY liked by DJT?
What if Pence REALLY liked DJT?
What if there were some blebs found deep in the file they compiled on Pence?
What if Pence confessed to those BEFORE the file was shown to him?
What if Pence was shown the file? “We have it all.”?
What if Pence is one of those who WANTED SINCERELY to be playing on the right side of things and convinced DJT and the white hats of that?
What if he was liberated by DJT and allowed the opportunity to serve because of many good qualities and accomplishments he had managed to have despite his (conjectured) capture by the black hats and the blebs were set aside?
What if Pence knows the file is there, and in case he is pressured or tempted to go along the blebby path, he knows it would be The. End.?

I believe that POTUS’ team already knows the source. There are many ways including the NSA being able to trace the msg back from the NYT to the source etc. etc. etc. And as to ID, writing clues might yield some info. But I think the NSA probably has it already as an open and shut case to ID the guilty.
