A 24-year-old homeless woman wrestled to free herself from an alligator after the animal attacked and tried to drag her underwater as she swam in Floridas Lake Hernando early on Wednesday, PEOPLE confirms.
Felicitie Gillette was swimming in the Citrus County lake around 1 a.m. when a 5- to 6-foot alligator grabbed her by her left arm and attempted to drag her underwater, according to a statement from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. She was able to fight off the alligator and called 911.
It came up out of nowhere and attacked, Gillette said in a frantic 911 call released to PEOPLE by the Citrus County Sheriffs Office. Im freaking out.
She told the dispatcher that the alligator swam away but was probably nearby, according to ABC News. She wrapped a towel around her bleeding arm and the dispatcher instructed her on how to stop the bleeding.
She was taken to Ocala Regional Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the FWC.(snip)
The night following the incident, a trapper removed a pair of alligators, one nearly 7 feet and the other almost 8 feet long from the lake, a spokesperson for the FWC tells PEOPLE.

So do they perform a police line-up?
"#1, could you open your jaws?"
Yeah, we’ll get right on that.
A. Late, Late Show with James Corden
B. Late Show with Seth Myers
C. Swimming in a Florida lake
If these were your options at 1 AM in Florida, what would you do?
[Yea right....... I too think a pond in Cetral Fla just might be a gators Natural Habitat and not a home less porkers at 1 AM]
“It came up out of nowhere”
That’s exactly what the alligator thought.
The gator was just trying to use her
as a pool noodle.
“... what would you do?”
As Tartuffe said, ‘That is a hard choice’.
Let’s go skinny dipping in the alligator lake at night!
I wonder if she looked up .... could have fallen out of the sky and attacked her.
"That's what he does! That's ALL he does!"
The drugs they gave her at the hospital probably weren’t as good as what she was already using.
Especially in alligator infested Florida lakes. Even the golf courses have at least one in every pond/trap. The state has finally started to allow hunting them again, but you can still expect that every body of water, even retention ponds, here has at least one alligator in it.
I feel sorry for her but it’s just stupid to swim at night. It’s their feeding time.
They are beamed in by the Florida Tourism Commission.
I’ve never been to Florida, but someone who used to live there, said that it’s only safe to swim if the ducks are on the water. They won’t go out on the water if there’s gators about.
LOL! Hey, Larry, is there a full moon out tonight? :D
I thought she was cute, too! Amazed that she fought off that thing. I find them terrifying.
From what I read, hospitals are sending patients home on Tylenol.
As a native Floridian.....anybody with any sense does not go swimming in lakes and ponds there without making damn sure there aren’t any Gators around. Especially not at night. Yes, they will kill you and eat you.
Haha - an oldie but goodie!
