A 24-year-old homeless woman wrestled to free herself from an alligator after the animal attacked and tried to drag her underwater as she swam in Floridas Lake Hernando early on Wednesday, PEOPLE confirms.
Felicitie Gillette was swimming in the Citrus County lake around 1 a.m. when a 5- to 6-foot alligator grabbed her by her left arm and attempted to drag her underwater, according to a statement from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. She was able to fight off the alligator and called 911.
It came up out of nowhere and attacked, Gillette said in a frantic 911 call released to PEOPLE by the Citrus County Sheriffs Office. Im freaking out.
She told the dispatcher that the alligator swam away but was probably nearby, according to ABC News. She wrapped a towel around her bleeding arm and the dispatcher instructed her on how to stop the bleeding.
She was taken to Ocala Regional Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the FWC.(snip)
The night following the incident, a trapper removed a pair of alligators, one nearly 7 feet and the other almost 8 feet long from the lake, a spokesperson for the FWC tells PEOPLE.

Hope the kid gets things straightened out soon.
Nothing good happens after midnight
As those that have lived in FL for a while know, it’s a pretty sure bet that if there’s water nearby, there’s gators nearby.
“Honey, does this alligator on my arm make me look fat?”
Note to self:
Don’t go swimming in Fla. lakes at 1am in the Summer.
BTW who picked up the tab at the hospital? Never mind, it was the taxpayers of FL.
Sounds like it came out of the lake it lives in...and she doesn’t.
I wouldn’t call alligators emerging from a Florida lake “out of nowhere”. “Out of nowhere” applies if you encounter one in an office building or any place where gators aren’t generally found.
Global warming? /s
Probly PO’ed she was fouling up its pond
She’s also a stoner, which might explain things.
Yea right....... I too think a pond in Cetral Fla just might be a gators Natural Habitat and not a home less porkers at 1 AM
Revenge of the Gators! They have been attacking in force all over the South lately. I think it is conspiracy. Has anybody checked to see if alligators are using social media to plan these attacks? I think they know a lot more than they are saying.
On a serious note: I am very grateful and happy she is OK. Being eaten alive is a terrible way to go. Of course, the gator probably would have just drowned her first, but still and all. Glad it worked out.
Cute girl 1, Gator 0.
...gator’s got your grannie...everybody said it was a shame...
You are bad (lol)
Exterminate them all.
PEOPLE trying to turn this into an epidemic or what,Citus Fl and Hilton Head,WTF:
Wednesdays attack comes just days after a 45-year-old kindergarten teacher, Cassandra Cline, was dragged to her death by an alligator while walking her dog alongside a lagoon on South Carolinas Hilton Head Island.
Desperate for free painkillers.
