DETROIT (WJBK) - A 12-year-old girl from Detroit is in the hospital recovering from severe burns after taking part in a disturbing trend called the Fire Challenge.
"I can't help my baby. I can't help her," said Brandi Owens.
Brandi is trying to be strong, but can't bear seeing her daughter bandaged from head-to-toe and in intensive care with burns over 49 percent of her body. Timiyah Landers and her two girlfriends were hanging out at her Detroit home on Friday after mother Brandi made them pancakes and went to take a nap. Minutes later, Brandi said she heard a small explosion.
"She came running up my hallway on fire from her knees to her hair," she said.
Timiyah was on fire. Brandi's fiance quickly put her in the bathtub and sprayed her down with water. Brandi rushed Timiyah to the hospital as the other girls admitted, they were taking the fire challenge -- something one of the girls had seen on YouTube where you douse yourself with rubbing alcohol and set yourself on fire.

Yeah ... and as not-so-little kids we knew how to play with matches and flammable materials without setting ourselves on fire.
“since youtube readily deletes videos and can scan for such titles, they are not a common carrier and do hold responsibility for the presence of such ‘challenges’ trending on their site”
Bingo. Google should completely liable for the medical costs here. Probably should shell out for pain and suffering as well. They’ve decided to get into the business of censorship but choose to allow some harmful content to remain.
Ditto on Facebook and Twitter. Plus, the financial institutions that selectively exclude certain people for purely ideological reasons should now be civilly liable for ANYTHING that goes wrong following the use of their financial services.
They’ve made their bed.
How is that relevant?
Good grief! Fire challenge? Sounds more like an intelligence challenge.
we had a version called statue of liberty where you dipped a finger in the shot, lit it and held it up while you did the shot. Then extinguished your finger.

Indeed. Even at 5 years old my granddaughter knows enough not to touch a hot stove, much less light herself on fire. She also knows what to do if she happens upon a gun in someone's house, ie, that a gun is not a toy.
Although my heart hurts for the 12 year old child, what she did was stupid. We should not excuse her from all blame.
ALL I ever need to know, I learned in kindergarten.
But God forbid someone should have a conservative opinion.
Just ask Alex Jones.
Why? Did Youtube light the match?
Some people are too stupid to live. May their lives serve as a lesson to others.
YouTube isn’t responsible for her utter stupidity.
Stick your head under the wheel of a truck challenge
Sounds like a 12 year old. Damn, I look back and wonder I survived. And I am not considered low IQ.
And mother was sleeping, something tells me she has been on her own a long time.
That poor kid...
If I burn my finger it hurts ...
I cant imagine what being burned all over her body felt like...
What a doofus. You are supposed to clench the bottle rocket between your buttocks and then light it!
Timiyah. IQ of what, 70?
Mllions of dollars.
That could have been tuition for a dozen bright engineers with IQs of 130.
Makes no sense.
Lemmings love YouTube it teaches them things they will never forget.
Maybe YouTube should go about pulling such videos instead of worrying that someone might watch a Conservative defend Christianity.
