DETROIT (WJBK) - A 12-year-old girl from Detroit is in the hospital recovering from severe burns after taking part in a disturbing trend called the Fire Challenge.
"I can't help my baby. I can't help her," said Brandi Owens.
Brandi is trying to be strong, but can't bear seeing her daughter bandaged from head-to-toe and in intensive care with burns over 49 percent of her body. Timiyah Landers and her two girlfriends were hanging out at her Detroit home on Friday after mother Brandi made them pancakes and went to take a nap. Minutes later, Brandi said she heard a small explosion.
"She came running up my hallway on fire from her knees to her hair," she said.
Timiyah was on fire. Brandi's fiance quickly put her in the bathtub and sprayed her down with water. Brandi rushed Timiyah to the hospital as the other girls admitted, they were taking the fire challenge -- something one of the girls had seen on YouTube where you douse yourself with rubbing alcohol and set yourself on fire.

“12 year-olds are going to do 12 year-old things -”
At age 12 it never once occurred to me that setting myself on fire would be a “Fun” thing.
As one very wise commentator pointed out in visual form here.
(Link is to Ralph Hayes, Jr.'s webcomic "Nip and Tuck." I don't want to repost his original work without permission.)
Even if the kids cannot monetize the clicks such a video could bring, they still see it as a popularity contest (”2 thousand views!”)
Glad to do so! Hope you don't have kids.
“Being done TO kids” implies an absence of agency. It makes the kids victims. They’re not. No 12-year-old is so stupid she doesn’t know what’s going to happen if she sets herself on fire.
Youtube didn’t do it. She did.
How many kids do you have? How many grandkids?
Youtube should be liable for this.
Burning wounds are learning wounds.
Vaulting to the lead for 2018 Darwin Awards... Timiyah!!
If Maxine had a daughter...
When I was about 14, I started working at my dad’s glass shop. Some types of glass use denatured alcohol and flame to aid in the cutting process.
Once in a while, I’d get some on my hands and they would catch fire, but it was with gloves on. That alone taught me that rubbing myself down and lighting it was a bad idea.
Then, about ten years ago, the valve on a liquid fuel camp stove broke while I was adjusting it which spewed raw Coleman fuel onto my hand. Whoomph, my had lit on fire resulting in first and second degree burns. That hand is still far more sensitive to heat and the skin cracks easily when it’s dry.
Good thing she didn’t tape a bottle rocket in her business and blow it to bits, everybody here would be yukking it up, such things are very amusing apparently. Oh wait, that was a guy about to be married. Nevermind.
As there were no conservative opinions in the video it was deemed appropriate for YouTube.
Twelve years old is more than old enough to know not to ignite yourself.
When I was a kid, we did flaming shots. We lit the booze in a shot glass, threw the flaming liquid into our mouths, closed our mouths extinguishing the flames, and swallowed. No one in my circles ever lit themselves on fire. Recently, I had occasion to observe the modern version of the ritual. They blew the flames out before they drank it! What the heck is that? Despite the girly move, they still managed to light the bar on fire and scream like girls. There were no girls present, but it was hard to tell. Is there no longer any way to exclude the low people?
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes... Come on mom, it’s not the phone’s fault, or YouTube’s. Did you know what your 12 year-old was doing?
“Youtube should be liable for this.”
I see this as a much deeper problem, where Youtube is just a fraction of the problem. Starting with the “Great Society” where ever since the rats have slowly gained control of our culture to the point to where street violence, mass shootings, kids literally turned out of schools stupid, abortions on demand - - up to the point that we elected a non-citizen President twice.
This kid may have a low IQ, or not. That’s not the point. When I was a kid this sort of crap just did not happen. Even the dumbest of kids knew fire hurts and kills.
It’s a cultural shift issue. Where Trump is literally hated by the left for trying to correct.
You did your part when you bought her an iPhone at 11 or 12.
Sometimes the stupid literally burns...
Some lessons are learned the hard way, if at all.
I see over and over that the present generation of kids (and the previous generation) lack any sense of discretion or understanding of consequences. Idiocy promoted on social media is a contributing factor to this lack of discretion.
