A host of historic artifacts, including a lock of Napoleon’s hair, will be up for auction in the U.K. on Saturday.

The unusual object is in an early 19th-century composite locket frame with a lock of hair from Napoleon’s wife, Empress Josephine.

“These are remarkable history,” auctioneer Andrew Aldridge of Henry Aldridge & Son told Fox News.

A manuscript note accompanying the locket frame states:

“The Emperor Napoleon's hair cut off after his death given to the Countess of Ranfurly by Madame La Croix housekeeper to the Empress Josephine from the time when she was Madame De Beauharnais to her death.”

Josephine de Beauharnais was Napoleon’s first wife and Empress of the French from 1804 until her divorce from Napoleon in 1810.

The lot has a pre-sale estimate of $892 to $1,530.

Napoleon is one of the key figures in European history and remains a source of fascination to collectors.

An extremely rare ‘bicorne,’ or 2-pointed hat, that was worn by the French leader at the Battle of Waterloo was recently sold at auction in France for $325,000.

The locket frame containing the locks of hair is part of an eclectic set of artifacts amassed by the late collector David Gainsborough-Roberts.

Another item of from his collection up for auction on Saturday is a fragment of cloth reputed to come from the flag of HMS Victory, the flagship of Napoleon’s nemesis Admiral Nelson. The lot has a pre-sale estimate of $1,275 to $1,913.

Never knew their names, but I’m sure you mean the blond.

IIRC, both couples eventually broke up.

Frida is the brunette. I didn’t care for her hairstyle in that video, though.

Hard to pay much attention to the brunette with that beautiful blond in the picture.

Never seen her looking better than in this video:

You’re welcome SC. And thank you for the 2008 story about the drummer. I don’t recall it at all. But then 2008 was a nightmare of a year, especially the last two months of it.

ie, B.O. takes overover in DC

We all ought to put snips of our hair into some kind of embellished object and auction it on you-know-where.
:-P

You could say the same thing about Alexander the Great, Gengis whatsisname, Caesar, many many others.

There’s always been a bit of a fascination with conquerors, successful or not, and especially if they represent an idealized image of your nation’s past.

Due to our local high schools efforts to indoctrinate me, I missed out on the year of Euro history, so I’m a bit weak on the French Revolution, etc., but I think that Mr. Napolean is highly regarded not just for his conquests, but also for bringing France out of the nightmares of the revolution and the terror.

As to that other fellow, well, you really should look up the youtube of Eddie Izzard talking about empires and such. Quite amusing.

Do you have a flag?

:)

There are many parallels between Napoleon and Hitler. Both men were not born in the country proper they ended up ruling. And both men pulled their nations out of a crisis: Napoleon and the Terror, Hitler and the Great Depression.

Then both men went on a megalomaniac wars of conquest, wars that ended in disaster. However, only Napoleon is celebrated today. They both should be on the trash heap of history, IMO.

Your parallels are correct, and I won’t argue that point.

It’s just a funny thing either way, and it would be interesting to see how they’re both regarded in another 200 years.

Aside from being more recent history, I’d suggest that the two major differences between the two would be the following:

NB did not attempt to exterminate a race of people.

NB invaded Russia when it was an imperialist monarchy, not when it was a holy paradise of the socialist peepel’s republik. (sarcasm, but when you think about it, the media loved AH right up until 1941, go figure)

Anyway, good day to you, or at least hopefully decent enough for a Monday

Yes, indeed. Napoleon will certainly fare better, for - I think - two reasons. As you said, he never tried to exterminate a race of people. And two, there were no photographers in his day. No one to capture images of all those dead Frenchmen in the snow.

And good day to you as well. It has been an interesting conversation!
