Silence of the Lambs: Are Protestants concealing a Catholic-size sexual abuse scandal?
New Republic ^ | June 2017 | Kathryn Joyce

Posted on 08/19/2018 4:28:27 PM PDT by CondoleezzaProtege

Over the past five years, in fact, it has become increasingly clear—even to some conservative Christians—that fundamentalist churches face a widespread epidemic of sexual abuse and institutional denial that could ultimately involve more victims than the pedophilia scandal in the Catholic Church. In 2012, an investigation at Bob Jones University, known as the “fortress of fundamentalism,” revealed that the school had systematically covered up allegations of sexual assault and counseled victims to forgive their attackers. Sovereign Grace, a network of “neo-Calvinist” churches, has been facing multiple allegations of child molestation and sexual abuse. In 2014, a New Republic investigation found that school officials at Patrick Henry College, a popular destination for Christian homeschoolers, had routinely responded to rape and harassment claims by treating perpetrators with impunity, discouraging women from going to the police, and blaming them for dressing immodestly.

Allegations of sexual misconduct have also engulfed four of fundamentalism’s most venerated patriarchs. Doug Phillips, a prominent leader of the Christian homeschooling movement, was forced to step down in 2013 from his nationwide ministry, Vision Forum, after he was sued by a former nanny who claimed he groomed her as a teenager to be his “personal sex object.” The following year, Bill Gothard, founder of the influential Institute in Basic Life Principles, resigned amid more than 30 allegations of sexual harassment and molestation by former staffers, interns, and volunteers. In the first case to cross over into the cultural mainstream, Josh Dugger, the beloved eldest son of reality TV’s favorite fundamentalist family, fell into disgrace in 2015 with the revelation that he had molested five underage girls, including four of his sisters. And this July, the chief of another fundamentalist reality-TV clan, Toby Willis, is scheduled to stand trial on four counts of child rape.

Classy of you to bring the President into this.

The same group crowing over the Church Scandals, made a big deal over Trump's locker room tape and over Stormy Daniels, remember?

Ever stop to consider their *real* reasons?

“...United Methodists Church...trans and gays are welcome...”

What about me? Shouldn’t the placard also reach out to me?

All the placard would have to say is, “All sinners are welcome” and I as well as assorted perverts would know we are welcome to attend a service there. But that congregation decided to pander to certain types of sinners and are probably celebrating the sin as well. That Church is not serving the poor lost souls.

No, simply because our ministers can be married. That means they do not have to stare at goats, young boys, and each other.

PING!

And to your point about celibacy, GingisK:

Now disgraced iconic Evangelical Pastor Ted Haggard was a happily married father of 5 engaging regularly in sex and meth with young gay hookers.

Albert Mohler, the President of the Southern Baptist Convention, released an official statement three months ago regarding the avalanche of sexual abuse and indiscretions being revealed in all corners of his denomination:

With the Catholic church, its central administration engendered gay sex across countries.

Fortunately, there is a limit to abuses of small churches.

“Silence of the Lambs: Are Protestants concealing a Catholic-size sexual abuse scandal?”

it’s pretty obvious there must be since no one has heard a peep out it, right? (he said sarcastically)

So what is this all about, CP?

For Mohler, a lot of "confession" about something back in May this year; no pertinent detail on what to be repentant of.

Re Haggard, why did he mot just remove himself from "ordination" and just get a job? While this seems to be "old news," what is the point you are making?

Specific accusations need specific, detailed, individually allocated charges of monkey-business (rather than monk-business).

Teachers who have never been charged do not have criminal records. That’s what passing the trash is, sending the problem somewhere else, before they become a legal liability by being reported. If you think school officials don’t discourage kids from reporting then you just aren’t paying attention.

The current statistic is 1 in 10 students report experiencing unwanted sexual behavior from a teacher or coach.

That is right. In many Protestant churches, there IS no hierarchy to protect the guilty! There is no cover up because there is no one to do the covering up!

But for your “scandal”, this Baptist recognizes one name, and he was someone I didn’t think highly of.

Sorry, but if you’re trying to excuse the Catholic Church based on there also being sin in protestant churches...it doesn’t cut it.

One more of your ‘see’ everybody is doing it... threads, just like the liberals do to redirect attention when they get caught with sin on their dirty hands. ... no big deal, I am going to call you the ‘whitewash’ queen.

I did read the entire report in the New Republic article which you posted. It was quite horrifying to have such coverups unmasked.

It has been clear to me for many years that the missionary culture is a quite separate entity than the typical (if there is a type anymore) of the child of the American nuclear family. But that is exactly why we as a "free" society need to protect, nurture, and promote the Dad + Mom + kids + stable home ideal, and help get thos trending away from it to get back on track.

The legitimacy of the "American" experience will be completely destroyed by the overwhelming expansion of the LGBT plus whatever other depraved social deviation is accepted and not repressed with prejudice.

Why should we allow it to be exported through religious "missionary" avenues?

No indeed. They are defensive and not concerned, a very bad sign for a church. Would not be surprised of pedophiles there. This attitude catters to certain types of people looking fora cop out or a priest to take it upon his consciousness the sins of others, absolving them

Are protestants afflicted with a celibate clergy? Certainly mainline protestants might with their rush to embrace perversion but so is the Catholic church.

Happens all the time.

Trying to excuse it and downplay it because *others do it too, so see, we’re not so bad or out of the ordinary*.

Well, they SHOULD be being held to a higher standard since they call themselves Christ’s representatives on earth.

If they are going to call themselves Christ’s representatives then they need to act like Him.

And they most certainly have not.

Kind of like the meltdown they have over Trump being a little vulgar 11years ago when their boy is raping women in the White House.
