How Millennials Killed Mayonnaise
Philly Mag ^ | August 11, 2018 | SANDY HINGSTON

The inexorable rise of identity condiments has led to hard times for the most American of foodstuffs. And that’s a shame.

[snip]

Along about a decade ago, though, I began to notice I was toting home as much of my offerings as I’d concocted. My contributions were being overlooked — or shunned. Why should this be? Mom’s extraordinary potato salad — fragrant with dill, spiced by celery seed — went untouched on the picnic table. So did her macaroni salad, and her chicken salad, and her deviled eggs. … When I carted home a good three pounds of painstakingly prepared Waldorf salad — all that peeling and coring and slicing! — I was forced to face facts: The family’s tastes had changed. Or, rather, our family had changed. Oldsters were dying off, and the young ’uns taking our places in the paper-plate line were different somehow.

I racked my brain for the source of this generational disconnect. And then, one holiday weekend, while surveying the condiments set out at a family burger bash, I found it. On offer were four different kinds of mustard, three ketchups (one made from, I kid you not, bananas), seven sorts of salsa, kimchi, wasabi, relishes of every ilk and hue …

What was missing, though, was the common foundation of all Mom’s picnic foods: mayonnaise. While I wasn’t watching, mayo’s day had come and gone. It’s too basic for contemporary tastes — pale and insipid and not nearly exotic enough for our era of globalization. Good ol’ mayo has become the Taylor Swift of condiments.

My favorite is cold meatloaf with mayo on white bread.

The breakfast of champions!

Meatloaf sandwich has to have mayo. Physics must be obeyed.

“Physics must be obeyed.”

So does the law of supply and demand. That’s why I always buy an extra pound of ground beef so there’s sandwich leftovers.

Does the meatloaf have a ketchup mixture top-glazing of some kind? Because now I am hungry.

I grew up on home made mayo, especially for potato salad. But, I won’t chance raw eggs any more. I just add my olive oil, lemon, salt, garlic to mayo ( minus the egg) for better flavor.

You Texans can keep your Miracle Whip. Go ahead and stay the Lone Star State. Or maybe be the Big All Alone, No Really Big, No I Mean Gigantic Huge State. Just keep the Miracle Whip there, and we’ll ALL be happy!

P.S. - MW is NOT Mayonnaise in any regard. Sorry if I have offended, I have had a really long day, and I’m finding that this topic is just what I need to vent.

"Sir Kensington's Avocado Oil Mayonaise" is pretty good, and doesn't have a lot of bad ingredients in it.   It is a bit pricey though, unless you can catch it on sale at a local grocer (as occasionally happens).   Just so you can see it, and check the ingredients, etc., I'll post a link for it on Amazon, but their price is very high there.

Never had mayo on fries until I went to Germany. Got hooked, been doing it now & then since.

Said author just doesn’t know what’s good and what’s not. Doesn’t matter if Hellman’s, Kraft, Heinz, store brand. Gotta have it in this house.

Why Miracle Whip isn’t mayo: The U.S. Food and Drug
Administration requires that anything labeled “mayonnaise”
contain a minimum of 65 percent vegetable oil by weight. And
though Kraft keeps Miracle Whip’s exact oil content a secret,
the company confirms that it is too low to meet the mayo standard.

MW is NOT Mayonnaise in any regard.

Truth. But certain recipes call for MW, and specifically state, "Do not use mayonnaise."

I have to disagree.

Mayo goes on almost every sandwich here; but for meatloaf, it’s Mustard!

I will never persecute you for digging good weird mayo, no matter how outlandish the ingredients. You are safe here. This is my vow, for social justice.

Mustard is actually a hypothetically acceptable alternative to mayo per a meatloaf sandwich. The vast majority of physicists agree on this. What kind of mustard, and is the meatloaf hot or cold? Toasted or not?

I love Hellmann’s. It’s the only mayonnaise I use.

You might try Best Foods, just for the heck of it ;-)
