Remember those striped gym socks that used to be all the rage from the mid 1970s to the early 1980s? I can't believe that I used to wear those socks but I did and so did a lot of other people.
Girls didn't have to wear them. They always got to go sockless...if they wanted. But some of them wore those socks too. Don't know why.
But boys, not so lucky. We had to wear these...
I would wear them still if I could get them. Great socks.
Socks that go over the calf stay up. I hate those new socks that some men wear that look like women’s tennis footies with the little pom-poms on the back. Very sissy. If you want to pick on boy’s/men’s athletic wear in the ‘70’s, pick on the super short “hot pants” worn in basketball in that era. I think the baggy below the knee shorts worn today are a real upgrade.
"...tube socks..."
I love Fox River’s diabetic socks. They are mild compression knee socks which have elastic woven in all the way up the leg. They do NOT fall down, they wick moisture to keep you from getting blisters, and they are soft like down.
just curious, what’s wrong with you?
I wear them when temps dip below freezing....
Maybe you were just a kid and hated them. I was a young dude in my prime, and loved them.
The stupid ‘no show’ socks that guys wear today, look like girl’s socks to me. I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing them.
I opted for the standard ‘crew sock’ length in the 80s, and have worn them ever since.
I think the baggy below the knee shorts worn today are a real upgrade.
.......................................................
I disagree. The baggy shorts worn today look more like granny skirts. Ugly and awkward looking, I quit watching the game which has no resemblance to the great game of yesteryear.
I like those socks:D
The long sock served to keep the calves warm, lessening the chance of muscle cramps. I always called them boot socks which I still wear from time to time. Mine are in natural wool, the best protector for the feet and legs.
The rest, why not?
Well, cross-country skiing, and/or really cold weather.
Any thing activity-specific, otherwise crew-length is preferable.
I liked the old striped tube socks. Did not like the short shorts, tulip shorts or something like that. Saw a guy jogging in those recently. Looked like he was a 1970s time traveler.
Heres the difference....these boys were much less likely of being lib snowflakes and much more likely of being straight and willing to fight for their country.
Yeah, I remember in High School some guys would wear two layers of them, with different heights, to get more stripes. They looked like croquet stakes. But anyone back then would think that the zero-length socks of today look girly. And come to think of it, they kind of do.
Now, what about bell bottoms? Or parachute pants of the 80’s. 60’s and 80’s music still rules, though.
God forbid Disco ever makes a comeback, though. Suffering through it once was more than enough.
We also were allowed to wear cut off jeans. Even for swimming and water skiing.
Used to buy tube socks for my two sons...born 1966 and 1971.
