One of Britain’s most famous comedians has defended Boris Johnson’s “joke” about the Islamic burqa face veil, calling it “funny” and “an almost perfect simile”.
Rowan Atkinson, the man behind Mr Bean and Blackadder, which frequently mocked historical and religious figures, said that the former foreign secretary should not have to apologise for offending Muslims.
Other comedians such as Jonathan Pie creator Tom Walker, promptly chimed in with their own satirical takes:

Mr Johnson, a former two-time Mayor of London, compared women who wear the burqa to “bank robbers” and questioned why they would “go around looking like letter boxes” in a Telegraph column earlier this week.
In a letter to The Times this Friday, Mr Atkinson wrote:
“Sir, As a lifelong beneficiary of the freedom to make jokes about religion, I do think that Boris Johnson’s joke about wearers of the burka resembling letterboxes is a pretty good one.”
He also appeared to recognise that public opinion has been supportive of Mr Johnson, adding that his comparison was “An almost perfect visual simile and a joke that, whether Mr Johnson apologises for it or not, will stay in the public consciousness for some time to come.
“All jokes about religion cause offence, so it’s pointless apologising for them. You should really only apologise for a bad joke. On that basis, no apology is required,” he concluded.
All of your supremely tolerant progressive liberal types are apparently unified in their intolerance of Boris Johnson's burka comments.

Yes, but not for reason of having fun with it.
Rather, Social Justice demands that white men be mocked, and people find the mocking funny even if it isn’t, as a form of comeuppance.
Blackadder wasn’t about comeuppance. It arguably loved what it mocked.
That’s like a plague carrier fleeing to the safety of the countryside and being taken in because they’re a “refugee”.
They bring the doom they fled with them.
The declaration of “enlightened times” is purely narcissistic....nothing more than virtue signalling and intolerant of any other opinion. This is exactly the problem, people believing in their own superior judgement and that all others are beneath them. It’s what makes it easy to dismiss the value of people that don’t hold the same opinion. It’s the first step to behaving like a Nazi, with Nazi consequences.
Oh BS. Blackadder was great. We own the series and have watched it numerous times.

Too true. A progressive referring to itself as enlightened is comparable to a Watusi from the 1500’s claiming to be an astronaut. Stands a better chance of being true than a progressive claiming enlightenment.
Atkinson is on my list of all-time funniest people. He understands something. You are not free if humor is not free. Humor is frequently a license for truth. Maybe it isn’t always funny. Maybe it isn’t always true. But if you shackle the effort, then you shackle society.
