Pret a Manger introduced female character Annie alongside a male snack Godfrey but decided to rebrand them as gingerbread biscuits.
Lovers of the snack have blasted the sandwich chain and labelled it PC madness.
Annoyed customers took to Twitter to vent their frustrations with many asking why they just couldn’t be called a gingerbread man and gingerbread woman.
One posted: “The world is going mad it’s a biscuit.
“We will end up calling them ‘the gingerbread treat shaped like a person that you can have one of once a week as they are too high in calories for a daily treat’.”
Another wrote: “They’ll soon be called, ‘Non Gender Specific Gingerbread People’.”
A third irate snack muncher said: “It’s a gingerbread man. End of.”
Previously packs had described Godfrey as a “gingerbread man”.
Annie is also described as a “biscuit”– rather than anything that could indicate gender, even though she has been specifically designed to look like a female.
The company claim it created Annie after receiving a letter from a customer asking why there were only gingerbread men.
Food and coffee director at Pret, Clare Clough said: “Since we’ve introduced Annie, we thought it would be simpler to call them gingerbread biscuits.”
But others welcomed the news.
One supporter said “PC gone mad” should be swapped for “can’t deal with change”.
Its the latest in a string of moves by UK retailers to appeal to changing attitudes towards gender.
High street stores John Lewis, H&M and Zara are all selling ranges of “gender-neutral” outfits
In related news, Heinz will be buying the “Gingerbread Man” product line and ‘intellectual property’.
They plan to introduce “57 Varieties of Gingerbread Persons”.

Yep, we need to be sensitive about the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered gingerbread people. And there are over 50 gender identities, so to be inclusive, they need gingerbread images of ALL of those identities.
It is heteronormative and binary of them, to just have man and woman. It doesn’t matter that they are gingerbread. We have to think about the larger message sent to the society by these characters.

When I was a kid, we had to memorize the 50, oops 48, States and their Capitols. Today, Political ‘Correctness’ requires the memorization of that list, with definitions.
No way! I’ll either address people as “Hey, you” or “Bubba”. Or perhaps “Sir”, “Madam” and “Miss”, just to see who blows a fuse.
She stopped, considered that, and nodded. And that was the end of that conversation. Today over such an innocuous and self-evident point I'd probably be fired and she'd run to social media to make sure I was unhirable by anyone else, but that's the way the cookie crumbles.
