United "Improving" 757 Capacity with Slimline Seats (sardine alert)
Airline Pilot Central ^ | 8/8/18

United is packing in more passengers than ever

United Airlines will be fitting its Boeing 757-300 fleet with slimline seats by the middle of 2018, increasing the number of economy seats on the aircraft to more than 200.

The Chicago-based carrier will add 21 seats to the main cabin on the aircraft for a total of 210 seats. First class will continue to have 24 seats.

I want to fly on “Fatboy Airlines”. When is that company starting. I want every passenger to have a sofa seat and a drink holder.

Seriously, the airlines care less and less about passengers. And apparently the passengers are little more than revenue commodities. They certainly aren’t customers any more.

Flew on a United B-777 from Denver to Honolulu recently. Was like riding on a city bus for 7 hours, seats were that comfortable.

“main cabin” should be referred to as “second class”. My daughter pointed that out and it stuck with me........

That makes me want to travel the world. City bus seating is the best! It's even better when there is no place to sit at all and you get to stand. I wonder when the airlines will book places to stand for the duration of the flight? Cargo seating anyone?

Won't be long before they load planes the way Japanese load trains.

In other words, as American people grow TALLER and add weight, book AMTRACK for survivable journeys.
At 6’5” and 235 pounds I’d be safer health-wise if I traveled by hitch-hiking.
Is there a photo available of the MIDGETS that are designing this nonsense?

“And my friends wonder why I never fly anymore.”

Not since 2001 and never again. Hell, I get claustrophobic on a Nebraska prairie.

Just curious as to how you’d drive to Europe and maybe stop to fill the tank in Iceland.

Airlines regulate for safety, not for comfort. When airlines decrease seats and bathrooms to points where even average size people are uncomfortable and it is difficult to safely evacuate an aircraft, the FAA will be forced to step in and draw a line. The airlines will push it to that limit. In then end, fewer will fly and the airlines will still get regulations they don’t want.

I very rarely advocate for government regulation, however in this case, it is a safety issue. There should be a minimum distance between the front of the seat and the seat in front of it. This is to allow room for individuals to exit their seats and get to the middle of the plane.

Further, there should be a minimum distance between the front of the seat and the rear of the seat.

“Here’s the new seat map:”

That’s a start but when they make everyone stand they can almost double the capacity.

I had to go in for an MRI recently, where you get slid into a narrow little tube with machinery clanking away in your ears. It was more cramped, noisier, and more claustrophobic than flying basic economy on a US airline. But just barely.

I will happily drive 400 miles to avoid a 1 hour flight in coach.

“You mean flying the way one did in the sixties and seventies?

with style

and class?”

I had a flight in the 70’s between Madison, WI and O’hare. I was only passenger on a dead heading Northwest 727. Stewardesses complimented me on my pipe smoke. Very short flight so I had to rush a couple of martinis.

There should also be a minimum distance between seats. Adult men cannot sit next to each other in coach without their shoulders in firm contact. Only one of them will be able to put his arms down in a comfortable position. This is all just asking for trouble.

One of those submersible Lotus cars from Q branch.

Might as well travel in style.

One thing though - we do have a choice when flying to Asia, and even the worst Asian carriers are far better than anything US-based. As to Europe, there are still some decent carriers (i.e., non-sardine airlines), but you do have to do your homework (it varies by plane, in addition to varying by airline).
