Most smartphones will revert to factory settings after a certain number of failed login attempts. You can probably look that up for your model .

Sorry for your loss.

The executor of his estate can have it unlocked.

I think they call it a “brick” at that point, and it’s hopeless. Of course, if Mueller and bunch believed there is info in there that could harm Trump, they’d find a way.

Technically challenged too but you could try to figure out the passcode. Try the last 4 digits of his #, the name of his child, any nicknames, DOB.

You should be able to get around this pretty easily. I don't know what kind it is, but the bootloader screen can be brought up by holding down the buttons for 5-10 seconds on most android phones. That will let you reset the phone. This is a hard reset and you lose all your information. Without giving this a lot of thought, that's what I'd do.

Sorry about your loss. Look up your model # and how to reset it. If you take it to a tech and say, “How do I unlock this?” They probably think you want to keep all the settings and stuff on it, like a virtual photo album the value of which is more than just the value of the empty photo booklet as it was bought years ago.

But if you specifically tell the tech, “I don’t want to keep the stuff on it. I want to reset it and make it like I just pulled it out of the box with no personal things on it yet.” then you’ve unshackled the tech to reset the phone. He’ll no longer worry about trying to keep on it the photos and contacts, which for most customers he’d catch hell for if he lost those.

Where did you take it? Did you try your own cellular service company?

I have a company that will get all of it’s info with a copy of the death certificate. Only costs a few dollars too.

Drivesavers. On my site, www.northeastanalysis.com you’ll see some more details.

They are a company I have used for more almost 20 years.

I actually work for a smartphone manufacturer.
The phone is still good and there is a code that you can enter (without actually logging in) to take it back to factory settings.
The SIM card, however, is registered with the phone service provider, but they can give you a replacement for about $20.
My brother in law got a new SIM card when my wife gave her old phone to her sister about 7 months ago.
You will lose the contacts, photos, videos and other personal stuff, but the phone is perfectly fine.

Figure out how to factory reset.

Don’t try and and open it as is, I know a few people who have gained access to the kind of information people have on there phones and wished they hadn’t

I would probably try to get it unlocked if you think there is anything on there that someone may want ie; photos. If you know his service company, they may be able to unlock it with proper paperwork. Or, they can tell you how to reset it.

I have unlocked two smartphones simply by looking up the external reset sequences for the models. Of course, you lose the data.

Before you do anything make sure if you want to try to save any photos or whatever and then make decision on which way you need to go...

I initially gave you advice on how to do a hard reset. DON’T DO THAT. There might be some pictures the family would like to have.

Go to xda-developers.com forums and androidcentral and ask people there. They’ll be able to help.

Search around first, someone has likely had the same problem.

The first they’ll tell you to do is on your computer install the Android SDK (Software Developement kit) and ADB (Android Debug Bridge). Just google it, unpack the files and the rest. There will be instructions on the download page. Once that’s done you can go into a adb shell and unlock it from there.

Condolences on your loss.

I agree with the person who said that the executor of the estate can have it done.

You need to determine what company provides the phone service - ATT, Sprint, Verizon, Etc. This is usually shown on the phone. Your grandson may have had a contract to buy the phone & receive service.

The executor of his will, who has the legal right to close out the affairs of the deceased, needs to cancel the service & the provider may own on the phone. Surely the service provider can cancel the previous service & establish a new account, or cancel the service & you can take the phone to another provider. If you choose another provider, you may have to pay off the contract, but if you stay with the provider, they will probably roll any unpaid contract balance into a new account.

Cancel the service ASAP to avoid continuing monthly charges.
