Once upon a time, it seemed as though women were encouraged to go through self-defense training. These classes were useful to a point, teaching women various kinds of avoidance tactics like not walking across a college campus at night all by their lonesome. But they were probably best known for teaching women how to fight back.
The classes seem to be falling out of favor as some segments of the population think its more useful to teach men not to rape than to teach women to protect themselves from the dirtbags that havent already learned that lesson by the time theyre old enough to understand what the word rape means.
Theyre not completely gone, however. Theres one that just wrapped up on Sunday in Savannah.
The Rape Crisis Center of the Coastal Empire held a back to school self-defense class on Sunday. The two-hour Safer U class was held at First Presbyterian Church of Savannah and taught by a certified and experienced Krav Maga instructor. Participants learned verbal and physical techniques that can be used by anyone, regardless of your physical condition.
Now, Im all for women learning how to fight back. We know from numerous examples that women who fight back are in a far better position than women who dont... .
At least with a firearm, they could pull the weapon and put a real stop to the attack. But no. Far too many people seem to think that women arent capable of defending themselves with a gun.
What do you think? Are these classes sufficient? Or are they ignoring a key defensive tool that many women should consider using to protect themselves?

Can’t we at least learn to defend against pointed sticks?
Because instead of taking responsibility for oneself, it’s the responsibility of the REST of the world to make sure that nothing bad happens to you.
Remember when feminism was all about independence?
I think that women and men that carry guns should practice, take gun safety classes and attend combat shooting courses. To do less is endangering those around the gun carrier. The Constitution says they have the right, and I agree. The training is the responsibility that comes with the right.
Ahhh, typing error. The site is Bearing Arms, not Bearing Aems!
Pointed stick? Oh, oh, oh. We want to learn how to defend ourselves against pointed sticks, do we? Getting all high and mighty, eh?
Rapist attempts to rape
Rapist get shot
Problem solved. Problem staying solved.
Maybe if enough of these animals get killed for their efforts they will consider alternative careers.
I know y’all are gonna make fun of me, or try and run me off because I’m not PC, or on the opposite end.,.not republican enough.
But I’ve been in an abusive relationship. And this is what I learned.
Your abuser is a pussy who has no will or power of his own, he/she must take yours. And he takes until you’re almost gone.
I’m saying, the one time I stood up to my abuser...and I relish the thought, had one ear in each hand and pounded his head on the floor....hating him for what I’d become...
The pussy took it and cried. After all those years I took his beating, and he’s crying because of a few jots to the head? And I’m almost ruined?
You do t need a self defense class. You need a self respect class.
I would never make fun of you. You stood up to the abuse, maybe not soon enough, but still did. Good for you. May you never see it again.
I’m just saying self defense only works when you want to defend yourself. And when you want to defend yourself, no class is necessary.
As for me, I figured I was gonna get hurt real bad, so why not go down fighting? (If I’m gonna get hurt anyway, why not try and get one in?) It came down to nothing to lose. That’s what these classes need to teach, because it is the reality.
Self defense must stress the FACT that your gonna get hurt, sweetie....so quit fearing the hurt and hurt your attacker any way you can.
Practicing how to break a hold or distract your attacker is always useful.
If you are grabbed from behind you might need to do something to get to your gun.
Now I am not talking about "Buffy" moves but if you know when when and how to hit you can buy yourself the time and space you need to pull your weapon.
I don’t know you personally but the thought of a woman being abused always angers me. I am thankful you stood up to him and more importantly that you survived. In that situation not all women do.
I for one am not going to say any of those things.
While many of us men aren’t subjected to the physical differences as adults, many of us were as children - until we got big enough to pop them back.
Never saw a repeat rapist after two or three .38Spl holes in the center mass of his chest.
A handgun in your hand, ladies, - and the WILLINGNESS TO USE IT - is the BEST rape prevention device you’ll ever need.
Good for you!
Sorry you had to go through that. Any man that abuses a woman deserves what that guy got - and more!
Abusers count on a woman’s low self esteem or a family controversy, to take control. An abuser can not control a woman who has security of the the love of her family,
Family is so important. I’d say if we want to help women who are abused, we first determine if her family really cares about her., because if they don’t, she won’t care about herself.
Of course, the family who does not care will DENY that they don’t care...
Survival is relative.
I have a wonderful husband now, a great guy, a good man.
But I love him intellectually , as a commandment, by oath.
Because I do not know how to love ...it is denied me. I can’t feel it, just acknowledge it.
So, does my abuser win?
No way!
People without gun knowledge are a danger to themselves and others.
I have a personal story: My wife is afraid of gun shots, thunder, fireworks and has refused to learn to fire a gun.
Her mother, sister and young niece were visiting when I had to take a business trip to the state where my mother lived. My wife went with me to visit. At some point the power company called and left a message that the power would go out at early evening for some work. My wife’s mother, sister and niece did not hear the message. When the power went off they panicked and called my wife. She told them where to find loaded guns in the house and did not tell me about it at all. So we have people wondering around in a strange house in the dark with loaded guns and probably fingers on the trigger and no gun safety experience at all.
I only found out when I found they had not put the guns back in the right place. Could they have defended themselves...NO. They were lucky they did not kill themselves.
Omg MtmClimber!
Don’t leave these ladies alone. It’s ok that they do not know, but that places an extra responsibility on you.
