A pregnant woman was served a cleaning agent in a cup rather than the latte she ordered from a McDonald's in southern Alberta.
Sarah Douglas was taking her son to a baseball tournament on Sunday morning when she went through a drive-thru at the McDonald's restaurant on University Drive W. in Lethbridge and ordered a latte.
As she drove onto Highway 3, she took a sip.
"I immediately had to put my hazard lights on and pull over and spit it out and rinse my mouth out with ... water," said Douglas, who is more than seven months pregnant with her third child.
"I opened up the lid of the coffee and out pours this pungent smell of chemical. It wasn't a latte at all."
She said the liquid was a watery-brownish colour.
Cleaning lines still hooked up to coffee machine
She immediately drove back to the McDonald's and asked to speak to a supervisor.
"I showed him the coffee and he had asked if I wanted a new one, and I said, 'Absolutely not, this is unacceptable.' I said I need to speak to someone higher up and he said he was the only supervisor on at the time, and he gave me his manager's phone number."

In a large, complex society of billions of people, weird things happen.
Couldn’t smell it when it was handed to you , ya right
Should have gone to Tim Horton’s.
and if that McDonald’s doesn’t use what ever is in the cup ?
I dont buy it.
So you don’t believe the manager when he apologized, or the owner when he apologized and said the cleaning solution lines were left hooked up to the latte machine.
They were all lying?
My thought exactly.
I once got a rubber fixture from a shake machine in my vanilla shake at McD.
She’s not guilty!
If the cleaning lines were still hooked up to the machine, exactly what is she faking?
I thought the same thing at first, but then realized it probably had a lid on it. She may not have smelled the chemical odor through the small opening, especially if she was distracted with kids in the car and driving.
Possibly - but theres the flip side.
Thereve been several weird incidents like this at McDonalds the past few weeks. Possibly this is intentional sabotage for McDonalds fighting the )15 minimum wage.
I had a two-inch roach in a glass of ice water once !
Gross stuff happens
Theres a lid on it.
Yuck!!!
Really? I see Crazy Eyes hidden behind makeup so thick it was applied with a trowel. YMMV
The machine is cleaned on a regular basis (which is why their coffee tastes better then other places). Usually the machine is left open when the cleaning is going on so you can not make a coffee drink. But it just takes one newbie to push the door closed and you can have an incident.
They obviously need a better lockout/tagout procedure.
The lids can stop getting a good whiff - it’s not like she put the crap in her own cup or spilled hot coffee on herself and tried to sue ... do you often knee-jerk or are there only a few specific topics that turn your rational self off?
I'm sure they're fine. It's a cleaner approved for use in food service, so it's probably minimally toxic.
In any case, when a machine is out of service it should be red-tagged, so that even the new guy just starting his shift will know not to use it.
