A man whose mother died during surgery 20 years ago is the suspect in the fatal shooting of a prominent Houston cardiologist who performed the operation, police said Wednesday.
Chief Art Acevedo said the mother of Joseph James Pappas, 62, was a patient of Dr. Mark Hausknecht, who was fatally shot as he rode his bicycle to work at Houston Methodist Hospital on July 20. Police earlier said Pappas was born in 1953.
Acevedo said a tip came in Tuesday after surveillance video released a day before showed the suspect, whom someone said they recognized. Police got a search warrant and went to Pappas home, but he was not there.
Acevedo said Pappas had made phone calls indicating he was considering suicide. The suspect has not been seen in almost two days.
There was evidence at the home linking Pappas to the killing, the chief said.
The renowned cardiologist, who treated former President George H.W. Bush, and the suspect were seen shortly before the shooting riding their bicycles on South Main Street, police said.
Surveillance footage showed the suspect following Hausknecht as both pedaled north, police said.
Hausknechts wife, Georgia Hsieh, said police told her that her husband was riding through a construction area when the gunman rode up in front of him and fired three shots while facing him.

So, for the killer, revenge really was a dish best eaten cold.
Hausknechts wife, Georgia Hsieh, said police told her that her husband was riding through a construction area when the gunman rode up in front of him and fired three shots while facing him.
...
This is the wife who blamed the gun right away.
Took him 20 yrs to get revenge? I don’t believe it.
The doctors’ wife (also a dr.) is now calling for more gun control. If the killer held a grudge against the dr. all these years, would she be happier if her husband had been beaten to death with a bicycle pump?
It sounds like he was crazy just before this. I knew somebody who was a friend of a professor killed by a man years after the professor had failed the man, as a student, in a class. Crazy people harbor grudges and then go over the edge. So I can believe it.
Don't forget Pelosi - she definitely belongs on that list. Eyes that are held open wider than normal - that has been catalogued as a possible symptom of personality disorder in some old medical texts.
Pappas.
Could be Greek Gang related or simply some kind of cultural expression.
Family members will say that Pappas is a good boy.
With Pelosi, could be that, plus plastic surgery.
65 years old? I guess he figured if he was going to do something about it, he needed to act before he was too old to pedal a bicycle.
There ya go. From 7/24/2018

Yes, they do. The known record was a killing of a retired prosecutor who had convicted a guy of a fairly minor crime more than 40 years earlier ... the guy just showed up at his home and shot him 40+ years later ... you can’t fix crazy ...
Some reach a boiling point faster then others..Others have their lids on really tight and when it finally reaches critical pressure, look out.
Btw, there have been cases where former disgruntled employees have returned up to 8 years later to exact their revenge...
For a hoot, do a search on the Maceo crime family of Galveston. It’s fun reading about the Mafia’s dealings for many years there. Tillman Fertitta, the owner of every restaurant chain on earth, the Golden Nuggets and the Houston Rockets is a nephew. One of his clan had a looooooong grudge against a guy and confronted him with a pistol when he was older than dirt.
>>>I wonder if he is part of the Pappas family that own basically every other restaurant in Houston<<<
Pappas John?
???
>>>Took him 20 yrs to get revenge? I dont believe it<<<
Somebody must have told the Killer that the Doctor was a Trump Supporter.
No, youre right. Crazy is crazy, and it only seems to get worse as with age.
Not really.Having worked in academic medicine I can assure you that patients, and the families of patients, hold unwarranted grudges connected to treatment failures.
In fact a famous cardiac surgeon at the very hospital that sends me my pension checks was murdered a couple of years ago by a man who felt that his 80 year old mother shouldn't have died.
I had no idea...thanks
No, Pappas Steakhouse, Pappas Seaford, Pappadeux, etc.
None of them are kosher, so I’ve never eaten there.
