"In this research, there was no evidence of heat coming directly up from the Earth's core to power the surface volcano at Yellowstone," Zhou said. "Instead, the underground images we captured suggest that Yellowstone volcanoes were produced by a gigantic ancient oceanic plate that dove under the Western United States about 30 million years ago. This ancient oceanic plate broke into pieces, resulting in perturbations of unusual rocks in the mantle which led to volcanic eruptions in the past 16 million years."..."
"This evidence was in direct contradiction to the plume model," Zhou said.
In her study, Zhou found the new images of the Earth's deep interior showed that the oceanic Farallon plate, which used to be where the Pacific Ocean is now, wedged itself beneath the present-day Western United States. The ancient oceanic plate was broken into pieces just like the seafloor in the Pacific today. A section of the subducted oceanic plate started tearing off and sinking down to the deep earth.
The sinking section of oceanic plate slowly pushed hot materials upward to form the volcanoes that now make up Yellowstone. Further, the series of volcanoes that make up Yellowstone have been slowly moving, achingly so, ever since. "The process started at the Oregon-Idaho border about 16 million years ago and propagated northwestward, forming a line of volcanoes that are progressively younger as they stretched northwest to present-day Wyoming," Zhou added.
The previously-held plume model was used to explain the unique Yellowstone hotspot track -- the line of volcanoes in Oregon, Idaho, and Wyoming that dots part of the Midwest.

...propagated northwestward.
Not sure how much credence I give to an article that cant get cardinal directions right.
Here, I believe they're talking about a section of an ancient oceanic plate which had apparently snapped off long ago but still, presumingly under its own weight, continues sinking (subducting) beneath the NA Plate.
Why not? Just a hunch?
Correct. Any Yellowstone eruption needs a federal permit to cross any state borders.
And there is this, too: "The process started at the Oregon-Idaho border about 16 million years ago and propagated northwestward, forming a line of volcanoes that are progressively younger as they stretched northwest to present-day Wyoming," Zhou added.
Hhmmm...I’m sitting about where that black arrow points right now..
I think Zhou needs to put sticky notes on the sides of her monitor labeled "East" and West".

Wow...missed that one. Guess I was laughing too hard at the Midwest idiocy.
since when?
Lol! I just now caught what you two are referring to.
"The process started at the Oregon-Idaho border about 16 million years ago and propagated northwestward"
You a re going to have to get off your butt in a few billion years. Keep your bug-out bag fresh.
At first I thought she perhaps got confused over the direction the *plate* is moving vs the direction the trail is moving. But then realized the plate is moving to the southwest, not northwest.
Yes, any day now, but women and minorities will be most affected so I’m not going to worry about it.
Not sure what you're asking. I was just pointing out the article writer wrote something was moving northwest when it's clearly northeast.
Wait, what? And all this time they've been telling us the "Science Is Settled"?!!
I may be wrong, but there is only one plume system to my immediate knowledge, and that’s Hawaii. Thus I’d find it odd for one to be so far in from the western continental margins, which have definitely demonstrated active tectonic activity over the past several hundred million years.
Rather, it’s plausible that some or most of Yellowstone’s heat sources are remnants of these earlier - and ongoing - subduction systems...but I’d have to review the geology and geophysics of the region to be more sure.
Iceland is a combo plume + sits atop a spreading center.
Iceland is above a plume + sits atop a spreading center. The spreading center supposedly drifted over the plume.
Hhmmm...Im sitting about where that black arrow points right now..

Just move your mouse a little bit and you get a different black arrow.
There.
Safe again!!
Any other problems?
